9 3/4 inch curves

hello i'm an HO scale modeler but my son wants to go into n scale so I have picked up some n scale track and included is 20 pcs of 9 3/4 curved. what length cars can run on these? 50 foot or longer?

I think you can squeak by with 50' cars, but I wouldn't go any longer.

Generally that which in HO is appropriate for 18" radius curves works on 9 3/4" in N.  N is slightly more than half HO.

Don't use passenger cars unless you use the oldies ya know like 40' ers as 85 are to long and won't look right on the curves

Almost any N scale with truck mounted couplers will RUN on 9 3/4 inch curves, if he really wants to run the longer cars.  However, as the others said, long cars will look terrible on such curves, and shorter cars will also be much more reliable.

For what it's worth, Model Railroader has a page in the December issue on a new industrial switcher, built on a single SD40-2 truck.  Minimum radius:  175 feet, or 11 1/8 inches in N scale.  They don't say if that's the minimum for the truck, or the minimum coupled to another car, which is limited by coupler swing.
