I have to wonder why I feel so strongly about the 2 man crew.

it is a mild sentence I agree. Also I do think that, as stated,
a second crewman is unlikely to have saved us from that incident.
One must conjecture with light supporting evidence on order to
come to another conclusion.
where I think... setting handbrakes must be effort.
At the end of a long run, a two crew can each have 4 cars to set (8 total)
that is certainly less work for one man.
that is more holding power even if they were all set the same marginal way.
.... thus I think safer.
there are other other reasons I feel two is preferable.
those reasons are not on display in this incident.
