Man, this unit looks nice... so clean and blue. I forgot about them (the 6900's) but saw them on the WLR often back in the day.

Something about the lighting in that pic almost makes it look like a model.

Is there any difference in length (or other major dimensions) between the SD40 and the SD40-2?  (or other variants like the SD40-2R or SD40M-2)?

65'8" (SD40) vs 68'10" (SD40-2). As for the rebuilds, you've got to know which it was rebuilt from (tho most -2 suffixed rebuilds are ex SD40s).

You know, it really is a credit to EMD.  That unit is 48 years old. You don't see any rebuilt U28-C's or similarly vintaged GE units out there.  Many, many EMD units have gone through rebuild programs, some more than once.

GE doesn't support parts for U Boats or -7s anymore and I believe they're phasing out -8 bits, hence why no rebuilt older GEs. Meanwhile you can buy EMD parts from GE and a billion other vendors.....

Understood, but those earlier GE's didn't remain in service much longer than 10-12 years anyway.
