As I've noted before, I'm very fortunate to work in an office that overlooks a fairly busy NS line.  Even more fortunate, if I'm not in a meeting or on a telcon I can usually record the cab numbers as the train passes by.

2014 is half over, and so far I've recorded 1050 different NS cab numbers!  A fair number of BNSF, UP and CP locomotives too.  #9900 (below, although captured at a different location) has shown up 5 times this year.

(Ya know, it's a less-than-thrilling job when the distraction and noise of a freight going by at 50 MPH actually becomes a welcome interruption...  )

Snagged today en route to an appointment:



The (young) engineer was eying me warily, so I went up to the cab and told him, "Don't mind me. This is a rare locomotive. Not many were made." His response was, "Well, it's a piece of s---!" To which I added, "Yeah, an OLD piece of s---. Miss your console, don't you?" He nodded, and at that point he got his junction signal and was off.
