There's probably a prototype for that someone.  As long as the adjacent ties keep the track in gauge, all that one has to do is support the rail, so it would work just fine.

I rebuilt the staging and mll areas of my benchwork to 24" width. Here's the "to-be" mill area, complete with new joists and backdrop, fronts going up this week if I have enough 1x3s:
