Check out this list of N scale manufacturers and see how many you recognize from advertising in major magazines... or any advertising at all, for that matter. FWIW, NZT has not advertised in any major mags...

From your list, I'd say about 1/3 to 1/2.  And many of those are predominantly European models and I wouldn't be reading magazines that would be their target audience.

Throw out the 5% extreme outliers--Kato, Atlas, MTL, Athearn on one end and the bajillion cottage companies on the other that, frankly, don't have the production capacity to make advertising even matter--and I still stand by my statements.

You guys act like every model railroad company makes millions of dollars.  Many don't even have employees, just employee. And again, I'm still not referring to the "cottage companies"...I mean the *big* dogs.  Yes, their only employee is a big dog.

What difference does that make?   I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. 

There is a broad spectrum of "one-man manufacturers" we're talking about.   Some of them it's their day job, but I doubt there are many of those.  Then there are some doing significant projects, some doing detail parts, some printing out containers, some making car loads that Lionel would reject.   SO yes, if we're gonna dig up everyone who's ever painted a pimple on a figure's a$$ and called themselves a manufacturer then yes, you guys win.

But seriously, with a few exceptions of Kato-sized companies, this is the very furthest thing from the truth. I know the owners of a number of other small companies, and they do not fit the model in your head (some do not even have a website). So, you will have to adjust your thinking.

That was kinda my point....for any manufacturer that IS advertising, it is a big chunk.  Obviously, if they're not advertising then by default it would be zero, and thus not a big chunk.

But see above, if you don't put some limit on it then yes I can probably find a thousand "manufacturers" that don't advertise in MR or the N-scale magazines.   Hell there's probably that many on Shapeways now.
