Maintenance of Way Car Question

I was wondering, could MOW cars be used in revenue service? Never? Infrequently? Frequently? Thanks for your reply.

Hmm... I woulda never
thought to ask that
question...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

I don't believe they can be used in revenue service; they can be moved in revenue trains, but they can't be used for revenue service or interchange per se.

I don't know to what extent other railroads do this, but I see several MOW tie gons moved on NS freights all the time.  NS has converted some of their older Top Gons to hauling old ties off the ROW.  I see these mixed in their freights also.

A railroad can haul it's MOW cars in a train with others, but once designated as MOW, it's a captive service car. Labeling a car as "MW" also means standard interchange rules don't apply (including such fun rules as center sill age, roller bearings not required, and others). Once labeled MW, the cars can't be used for revenue moves. Company service only.

I had a sneaking suspicion that was true. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

You could however use a regular revenue service car to carry MOW/company service loads on occasion...

But if a car is renumbered/marked and assigned specifically to MOW service, it's pretty much restricted to company service.
