Weekend Update 5/18/14

For my third installment this week, I just got back from a Gandy Dancing work party. We had a new guy! Not just new to the Gandy Dancers, but new to the hobby! He bought a Kato starter set and ran into one of our crew when he went back for more. We talked bunch, and I pointed him to TRW, so hopefully we'll have a new member to abuse soon.

Foobies car since the window arrangement is wrong and I know the car number is wrong

Actually the only thing foobie about your model is the number, the CB&Q had cars with the 3 - 2/2 - 3 window pattern and the 3 - 3/2 - 4 window pattern, the CB&Q MA-9 class (2305 - 2315) had one window less than the MT model while the MA-10 class (2316 - 2324) were just like the MT RPO (except possibly for some roof detail... will pull out Bill Glick's excellent books on "Q" passenger cars to see for sure).  It sure looks nice all gussied up in silver paint.

I should have a new page for N-scale Varnish that deals with the kitbashing of the MT RPO into other cars before the weekend is out!!!

Seems I've finally managed to resurrect the Trix F unit from my Dad's old Postage Stamp Trains set. It's not perfect, but it went from stuttering at high speeds, when it would run at all, to mostly running smooth at low speeds. Still stalls occasionally, and it doesn't like the plastic frogs on my Atlas turnouts, but at least it's alive. ALlIIIIIVE!!!

Played around with basic grass and low shrub cover on the test section this week.  I used a mix of static flock, Heki grass mat material, poly fiber and ground foam to get a nice dense rough grass and shrub cover.

Completed GHQ R50b reefers.  The first one is done with PRR's Futura lettering scheme from 1939.  The second is the standard PRR lettering style.

There were around 50 made.  They were available for 4.5 seconds.

Where ride height matters....

These were a limited run and were not put on the GHQ website.  Ordering was done through Michael Livingston.  There will hopefully be additional runs.  Search R50b for Railwire discussion and more info on these cars.

Thank you Jerry.  Since I knew it not accurate I wanted to make that clear!  I used the photo below as my source and inspiration.  I overbought on the MT heavyweights when they came out so I am looking for quick hitter projects.  This RPO and my Q 12-1 from a couple weeks ago are fun for me to throw in a Q consist for some variation!  I look forward to Your website update!

A second post for the weekend!  In addition to Thursday's ops session, work continued on the Castlegar/Kraft mill scenes, specifically the backdrop was finished, additional lighting added (LED tape) and a few trees placed along the background.

Picked up another Atlas/Kato RS11, this one much better than the MEC. Gave it a good cleaning, and tune up. Runs like a champ!
I appreciate all aspects of this hobby, but I think it's the motive power that really gets it for me, especially if you can make a turd run better
than when you got it.

got up early this morning to get some texture and glue on so I can color the purple foam 'rocks' this week...ballast, talus, and final vertical rock painting (I'm going to represent the sedimentary layers with airbrushing and masking)...
that gives me the last week for details and nit-picking...I'll add a bit more green, especially in the foreground to mark this area....
