I believe the GN 39408-39409 cars were delivered in the Empire Builder scheme - the Feb 1954 build date suggests this as that was the scheme at that time for special equipped boxcars.  The 21450-21939 cars that were renumbered appear to be 12 panel boxcars as built at GN's St. Cloud shops, not PS-1 cars.  When I first saw the Atlas announcement I suspected a "foobie' as I didn't think the GN had any PS-1 40' boxcars, but in checking - they did have that one order.   The 12 panel cars also have a 6' door, rather than the correct 8' door of the Atlas model.

The PS-1's that we are producing were built at Michigan City, February 1954 and delivered to the GN as 21950-21964, painted brown, with black ends and white lettering. Sometime around 1960, they were repainted into the Empire Builder scheme. That being said, we have to change that "NEW" date to a shop date...

Building on Spikre's post, these were a part of a 100 car production from 2/54.
BAR   4500-4504             5
WP   1961-1970           10
NYC   175000-175024   25
N&W   53995-53999             5
C&O   2990-2999               10
ERIE   84000-84009           10
PRR   47000-47019       20
GN   21950-21964       15

That is interesting!
The database indicates the 15 PS1 boxcars purchased by the GN were part of the 100 cars built by Pullman with their own cushioned underframe, (see up-thread) and numbered 21950-21964. All of the 100 cars of that order had 8' doors and 10 panel sides.

There is a B/W photo of a short string of them in Kaminski's Pullman book, but they appear to be painted in one color, without a logo or Great Northern spelled out, so possibly unfinished?  There are a couple of photos online of GN PS1 boxcars sporting the renumbered series in the empire builder scheme. I'll see if I can post a copy of the pic from the Pullman book when I get home. Perhaps they were painted in the Empire Builder scheme when they were renumbered?

Cheers,
Scott

GAH! Simultaneous posting!

Again thanks for the clarification Cory, means I can't purchase one and renumber back into the original..... :P
FWIW: Your posted artwork is also missing a shop date on the L&N car....
Can you answer my question regarding the scheme on the Southern car about to be released. Is it the 'as built' scheme?
Cheers,
Scott

I'm almost certain it is as delivered. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The few photos I have of the Southern cars all have shop dates on them, that's why I can't be 100% certain...

 :)
  Scott,
those pics are post 66 with no roofwalks.
interesting the cars have different slogans on the sides.
did find the longer roster for PS-1s,so will post the Lot letters next.
GN also changed the trucks on 39413,so it must have still been in
  some sort of specialized service.
would think by 65 the the 60' and 86' Auto Parts cars would have
knocked these cars out of Auto service.
note that all the roads except BAR had a Ford plant or 2 on them.
but BAR must have had a parts supplier on line ?
maybe some day the story of these cars will be fully told.

here are the official Pullman lot letters for lot 8160:
  8160A - BAR
  8160B - WP
  8160C - NYC
  8160D - N&W
  8160E - C&O
  8160F - ERIE
  8160G - PRR
  8160H - GN
one oddness about this sort of overt cooperation is the roads balked at Roller Bearing trucks.
the rest of the cars seemed to be top of the line for 1954.
the NYC cars were the only PS-1s delivered in the Red and Grey "Pacemaker" scheme,NYCs
only 8' door 40' PS-1s and only Cushioned underframed PS-1s.
the PRR cars were an early use of the Shadow Keystone and Calendar style lettering, maybe
the 1st cars  delivered decorated that way ?
did all the cars have load restraining belts ?
or did GN install belts later ?
will see if more pics can be found here, seem to recall the GN cars being plain when built.

I actually didn't buy any of the very nice Erie cars because they were too new.
