WRONG !! The ATLAS/Kato GP30/35 and U28-B all had truck mounted couplers.

You sure about that?

The GP30/GP35s made in Japan had closed pilots.

The GP7/9s and U25B from Japan did have open pilots.

Yes I am sure about that, thec KATO made GP30/35 have open pilots and truck mounted couplers. So did the U-25Bs.I have 3 GP30s ,3 GP35s,and 2 U-25Bs.The early pilot kits were just that. You asembled the coupler, installed it in the pilot conversion then glued the conversion piece in to the pilots.I also have 2 RS-11s,a RS-3,and a SD-9 with pilot conversion kits installed.

Can you post a picture of one of the GP30's?

It would appear that the Atlas/Kato GP30 did not have truck mounted couplers, as per Mark's page. The Atlas/Roco however did.

http://www.spookshow.net/loco/atlasgp3035.html

Anyways. I have a new set of Kato rails coming and when I get the MT conversions, I will do what it  takes. I'm sure it won't be a big deal, and will
certainly be better than the previous owner's hack job. I mean the couplers he screwed on barely line up with others, and at the slightest hint of
track uneveness, come undone. Like I said, good for a laugh.
Being that this would be my first pilot conversion on an RS11 though, I was surprised that it has to be screwed. My previous experience is with L/Ls GP18
which are simply glued in place, and much like CATT's observations, have pulled as much as 18 cars, with no hint of seperation.

Uhhh, Sorry, but I'm right on this.  ALL Atlas / Kato and ALL Atlas / China GP30/35's came with body mounted couplers and NOT truck mounted couplers.  Besides, Atlas never made a U28B... :o

The only Atlas GP30 that had truck mounted couplers was the 70's version made by Roco.

I would also like to see a picture of yours.  Perhaps you can prove me wrong!

TYPO on the U-28 I meant U-25B.

I have a slight problem with the pictures,I spent two hours yesterday looking for the locos which went to the last show with the Onandaga Sub layout. Somewhere in this room there is a box with 5 A/K GP30s-35s,2 GP-15Ts and a dozen boxcars.(atleast I hope there is) :(
