He's right. Walthers made them (very badly) in N scale but haven't rerun them in YEARS. Doors were usually VERY BADLY warped due to the glue they used and the cars detail was not very good even for the '90s...but they made them:

Atlas would do a much better job.  I REALLY like the special edition Texas South-Eastern O scale car.

Just about anyone could do a better job (now). The problem is that since they have been made at some point in the past, MFRs have a tendency to steer clear not knowing if the car didn't sell because it was unpopular or poorly made.

Well there wouldn't be one head scratched on the poorly made Walthers cars , though I still have them and will keep them . Atlas would sell better that the Walthers ones . I wouldn't hold Atlas to the fire on road names being exact to each roads prototype . As Victor has brought up in the past , each road had something different . Just the fact the all SS boxcars were all not 40 footers would be a welcome change of the eyefull of a cut of cars .

While the manufacturers are the only ones who really know if this is a true statement,  these two forty foot SS cars look pretty darn similar (to my untrained eye).

They both are based on the same prototype.  But the Atlas car is a better representation of the prototype.

  if its any consulation,the HO Walthers cars were rather bad also.
  the 50' Roundhouse WP based car was much better detailed,and
  the End Door version was Properly braced,something Walthers
  totally missed,or decided the bracing was overkill.
  any one figure out what cars the Walthers models were based on ?

I don't think anyone was able to find a prototype. The Walther's car is a 4/5 (4 panels left of door, 5 on right) but prototypes are usually 3/4. I've never been able to find a good match for this car.
