Not really. It varies wildly, and often defies expectations. I have three rough classes of product: ones where people line up to pledge their purchases that go nowhere, sleepers that explode, and old reliables that trudge along slowly but steadily. Unfortunately, all too often I've invested the greatest effort producing the first class, which compounds the loss.

If the owner of the closed company still possesses the ability to create them, then it would be a No-No.

But, since the item in question might still be out there to purchase, if you bought some, made resin castings of them for your own use, just never sell them, or actively advertise them,  there's not much they can do.
(A guy in a trench coat and dark sunglasses standing in an ally-way going "Psst.  Buddy, wanna buy some N scale re-railers?) :scared:

A couple years ago after Sunrise closed he made a special run of horns for the local hobby shop, Bruce's Trains in Sacramento. But nothing since then that I know of.

Yes, the Sunrise website still works.
http://sunrisenterprises.com/

On that page the owner says:

They shut down.

They are keeping the molds.

So I don't think someone should just copy their work and then sell it.
By keeping the molds, he is clearing holding on to "his" stuff.

I still don't see where anyone was advocating that the Sunrise part be molded, cast and then offered for sale.
What I saw was they OP asking if someone had the part to lend to be molded.
Let's not jump to conclusions.

I was speaking in generalities.

Not directed at anyone in particular.

If I remember correctly, on another board there was a guy wanting to copy commercial stuff like Detail Associates parts and sell them.

When I made the T-6 casting for commercial purposes, I asked Atlas' permission since the RS-11 hood was a main component.  They granted it.

Doug,

How about this.....

Is the sort of thing you want?

For a pack of 8 it works out about $7.  I can add more to the pack if you want and that will push the price up slightly but each will cost less?  These will only print in the FUD material.

The only think I need to check, as I have scaled these of a photo, what length do you expect them to be, in the real word that is.

Impressive!    What size are those holes and tabs, and how will that print using the FUD?

Hi Ed,

Based on all the stuff I have printed in FUD to date this will print no problem, it has similar sized details to the trucks I have provided with other models and that detail came out fantastically.  And everything meets Shapeways minimum requirements for FUD.

The holes in the tabs are 0.6mmØ (0.02362") Ideal for brass wire etc.

James, that's awesome.  I don't want to start picking nits but the overall shape is a bit off.  It needs to be wider at the large end and a less of a linear taper toward the small end, if you know what I mean.  Take another look at the photo in my original post on page one and you will see what I mean.  If you can get it a bit closer, you will nail it and I'm in for a bunch.

Hi Doug,

Not a problem, I see what you mean.  I will adjust it later and post up another image.

James,

I'll get the real-world and the n-scale measurements for that rerailer for you today and post them here.  Also, have you though about making the other one as well?  If these are done on both N and HO, I'm sure they would sell well.

Hi Doug,

Thanks, that will make it very easy for me draw.  I will do both.

James,

I tried to use an actual photo and insert the dimensions thee but I couldn't figure out how to do it.  So, here they are and I hope they make sense.

R/W = Real World Dimension
N = actual n-scale measurement

Overall Length - N - 0.210"   R/W - 34"
Width at wide end - N - 0.132"    R/W - 22"
Width at narrow end  -  N - 0.062"   R/W - 10"
Thickness at middle of part  -  N - 0.030"    R/W - 5"
Thickness at each end - N - 0.013"  R/W - 2"

If you look closely, you will see two notches in the wide end.  I don't have the measurements for these and I wouldn't mind if they were left out.  I think you have the mounting tabs exactly as they should be.

Also, the side with the mounting tabs appears to have more of a bend in it than the opposite side.

Hope this info. helps.  Just ask if you need anything further.  I/m more than willing to help with this.

James,  I just noticed that you do indeed have the two notches so disregard that comment.  I don't have the width of the slot down the middle but I could get that if required.  It's likely around 2.5 - 3" I would guess.  Your length looks about right.
