Curious as to know how it went. Looks like an easy job. Any pics?

I've built pewter models using CA, but they were basically a static display. This will be my first time building pewter trucks, will CA hold up or would an epoxy be a better choice.

I have been working the R50b kits and they are well done.  The resin cast body is excellent.  I chose to use a different brakewheel from the ones provided to better match the prototype.  I added a wire grab iron on the top ends of the car per prototype photos.  The underframe has a separate casting for the brake valve that is nicely done.  The trucks fit together nicely.  I think that CA glue would work, but I will probably use Walthers Goo for its strong adhesive properties.  I have not operated the trucks yet, so stay tuned.  As with the American Limited trucks, it will be important to ensure that the sideframes are aligned properly, and the soft metal nature of the material means that the sideframes will have to be carefully closed onto the wheel axels (and handled carefully).

Paint and lettering later this weekend.  I will be bringing the cars to the PRRT&HS annual meeting next week.  The decal look very well done.

Doug,

Would it be correct to replace the trucks with the ALM trucks? I luckily bought about 5 spare sets of those a couple of years ago.

Almost seems to me you could assemble the trucks with wheels on the tracks to ensure alignment.

Marc,

Yes, they would be appropriate.

Hi Marc:
There is nothing wrong with the metal trucks that come with the kit.  They are identical to the ALM trucks except that the metal trucks have friction bearings and the ALM trucks have roller bearing journals.  All photos I have seen of R50b cars have friction bearing journals.

By the way, forget the Walthers Goo.  It remains too flexible, CA glue is better.

Crap.  I haven't even been able to contact GHQ to pay for mine yet.  The 3 times I've tried nobody's answered the phone.  Working nights is a pain.  Hopefully Monday morning.
