Sound decoders going silent?

Has any one had issues with the sound no longer functioning? I have had this happen with two so far, and am wondering if I fried it somehow, or some how managed to MUTE it. I have motor control with one, but the decoder gets very hot.

Rick,

What brand/type of a decoder?
What brand/model of DCC system?
When did it work properly last time and when did you notice the problem?
Is it possible that you zapped with with static electricity (from your body)?
