Be sure to enjoy the video of this operation as modelled on Mark Dance's N scale Columbia & Western:

A few years ago I got a chance to run on Mark's layout— specifically on the Slocan/Rosebery job.  It was a lot of fun, and part of the many reasons why I'm looking at car float operations for my own layout.

I may also be environmentally predisposed to liking rail/marine operations as I grew up in Michigan, which featured car float operations between the US & Canada across the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers, as well as "bigger" boats which connected Luddington, MI to Green Bay, WI.  The GT/CN ferries ran until 1995, when it was eliminated after improvements to the St. Clair tunnel.

Wasn't there an issue of Model Railroader a few years back with a trackplan based off that CP line to Naksup?

Trevor Marshall has talked about it:

and Mark Dance's efforts have been written up in Model Railroad Planning 2012.

The line from Slocan to Nakusp can be seen on his near the middle of the "waterline" level and the "4th level" layout diagrams (via Mark's flickr):

Thanks; I actually got a reply off the trains.com forum; it was the April 2009 issue. I'm going to order some back issues of MR sometime soon (the first three issues I bought before I had a subscription in fact) so hopefully I can also get MRP 2012 then.

If I remember right "Trains" had a companion article to the MR piece on the CP barge operation.  You might want to look into that as well.
