Tom L--I agree that the pickle car was a pain to build, especially getting the tank wrappers on and the flimsy fiberboard parts like the ladders, but I really like having the unique end result.  Here's the one I built last year.

Mark,

Are you using spackle to fill in the gaps between the pieces of foam?  I want to try using foam but wasn't sure what to use to do this.  Is it just the common DAP vinyl spackle?

Dito MC's comment.  Lightweight spackle is a little more expensive, but completely worth it. 
Other spackle, and even joint compound definitely work just fine, but lightweight spackle just works so much better.
