Weekend Update 1/5/14

I am back with photographs of progress on this week's model projects - no ATSF engines this time.   

First up:  Archer rivet decals applied to the ends of my three Provincial Museum display coaches:







Next up:  cable car BCOL 6504 is now assembled and ready for paint.  Details added include door hardware, end electrical connections, brake equipment, grab irons, ladders, sill steps, and roof vent pipe.  I have yet to cut out window glass for the side windows.






With the cable car built, it was time to move on to the next car to be built which is panel track car BCOL 6510.  Here is a prototype photograph:




It appears to be a cut down 52'-8" IL bulkhead flatcar, but the bulkhead construction, side sill arrangement and jacking pads do not match any of the BCR cars.  I had planned to convert this car from a Kaslo Shops bulkhead flatcar kit, but after realizing the various structural differences I elected to undertake a full scratchbuild.  Here is the underframe with bolsters, centre sills and cross-members, the end and side sills, the deck, and the bulkheads so far:

really like seeing the Archer rivet decals being used to advantage...I want to try these for a number of projects, but was deterred by seeing only 'HO' and 'O' scales listed...these look suitably small...at least for my needs...
What size are these?

They've been offering the N details for a while. Where are you seeing just HO and O?

Makes sense. Micromark is sort of another Walthers, and they don't venture very far outside of the HO and O comfort zones for scale-specific supplies.

I suggest buying direct from Archer, anyway, to show support. The direct interface with interested modelers is what encouraged development of their N product line.

FYI, if you have something specific in mind, he will do custom sheets but they aren't cheep.

It's hard to tell if the Micro Mark rivet decals are made by Archer. If so, Archer is branding them for Micro Mark; if not, they're being made by a third party.

Randall....YES!...after reading your advice....I fiddles with it a bit...the cork is white-glued to the foam...the track is CA'd to the cork....
I pulled the cork from the foam in the area of the small curve leading to the 'ballasted deck trestle'...and worked it such that it provides a gentle super-elevation with s proper amount of easement...the 6 axle Alcos really help...they're sensitive to finicky track...abrupt changes in track elevation in all axes....so, once the Fast Mail pulled by the Alcos, were able to negotiate the curve, at any speed, and in both directions, with no tracking problems, nor headlight flickering of the Engines (indicating a loss of wheel adhesion laterally), I was satisfied. I also went over the rest of the track before my addled brain (plus the fact that far too much time passed between laying the cork and laying the track) realized that both 180 degree curves on the lower, Westbound track were already superelevated. I made the choice not to superelevate any of the curves on the upper-Eastbound trackage.
I appreciate the advice-I'm very happy with the improved appearance of the trains leaning into the curve at this location.

With snow on the ground yesterday, I wanted to go try out the new 55-250 lens I got for Christmas.

I didn't know when they were supposed to show up, so I quickly made my way over to the station in time to catch a few Amtrak trains.


I was starting to be impressed with my new piece of hardware, and apparently, so were the screeners at Railpictures.net: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=464962

Not bad for a casual day out to try out some new hardware.

Ed, if I lived near this type of trainspotting location, even a photo I would take with an old cell phone camera would look impressive!   

Seriously though, those are awesome shots!  Seems like you were using the telephoto lens to manipulate the perspective. Well done!

Speaking of nice railroad photos, I miss all the photos Rob Pissani used to post on the A-board.

Here is the latest update on my replica of the (now extinct) PRR passenger station by McVeytown.  Other than small details, ill call this one done!




The only other station to build yet is the PRR Huntingdon station.  But i am in no hurry to start it yet.
