So....here we were having a nice and useful conversation about Bachmann's ATSF Northerns I thought, for those of us who like, appreciate and admire these marvelous 500,000 pound Santa Fe machines that ran between Los Angeles and Kansas City, pushing 100 mph with heavy transcon trains, a distance of over 1700 railroad miles, day in and day out, without engine changes, just to be turned around and ran back, years before diesels were able to accomplish a similar feat, just to be hijacked by another silly "I'd like a K-4" nonsense. Good for you, but can you PLEEEESE  start your own thread about the the wonderful iconic K-4's and transcontinental Pennsy's and let us enjoy our own esoteric and meaningless Santa Fe conversations without butting in?? JEEZ, PLEEZ ... a little courtesy? Is that too much to ask??
(Drasko, even though this is your thread, would you please do me a personal favor and please hold your tongue, for once?   ...:)
Lord,....and regards to all, Otto K.

You K4 guys should permanently afix your request to your signature (ala what Victor Miranda used to do on the old Atlas forum re his desire for an Atlantic). That way every single steam thread wouldn't have to turn into a "I want a K4" thread  :D

Cheers,
-Mark

I'm just entertained by the fact that I speak my mind on 2 threads and get emails yet these yahoos hijack every single thread with this stupid request. Heres the answer, they aren't making it because they feel it won't make them money. Money is what its all about right. Ill leave it at that and not make any cracks at anyone. If you want a k4 save your money and buy brass or make your own.

Meanwhile back at the ranch. I have heard from a good source that this rumor is just that unfortunately.  Knowing my luck, an fef and atsf northern will simultaneously hit the shelves next year. Good thing my truck just got paid off and I'm selling my sledpull truck!

Hell, I'm an N scale Pennsy guy and I'm sick to death of the K4 caterwauling.

Please let other guys talk about their steam engines, please.

As draskouasshat says, anyone wanting a K4 badly enough can have on with enough coin or skill.

As for Santa Fe steam, I've always had a thing for the AT&SF.  The Northern is a well proportioned beast.  Pennsy fans take note; during a power crunch in 1956 Pennsy leased steam locos from the Santa Fe for the Western Region (Midwest).  I know the Texas type was leased in numbers but there may have been a Northern in there as well.

I recall the first run of the Bachmann K4 in HO way back in the eighties.  Did they sell well?  I don't remember seeing any of them on club layouts or module setups even back then.  Again, did the subsequent reissues make any money?

I'd love to see the Bachmann ATSF Northern get reworked.  It's long over due, and I'd buy one.

Rock Island had the most Northerns, they should obviously do that instead.

Wasn't the Canadian National the largest 4-8-4 owner?   Are you just referring to the term "Northern"?

I don't know the semantics, it's just on every RI video that shows a Northern  :).  I have heard or read it elsewhere.  It could be US only, but I do think it's the 4-8-4 arrangement.

Jason, you're right, Rock Island had the most 4-8-4's in the US, like 85 of them, compared to 65 ATSF, 70 SP, 45 UP etc. Of course the RI engines had smaller drivers, 69" and 74", compared to the ATSF ( and other western roads) 80" drivers which the Bachman model attempts to represent, sadly with way undersized drivers. That's why I wish they would start from scratch to get the proportions right.
The undisputed champion as to the total number of 4-8-4's In North America is Canadian National with around 160? engines, but they didn't call them Northerns up north, go figure, and they too were somewhat smaller engines with smaller drivers.
Dave, I always knew you were a man of good taste 8) I also knew about the ATSF Texas types leased to the Pennsy to run along their 2-10-4's in Ohio, and what a sight that must have been!
Kind regards, Otto K.

Well there you go.  Let's all shoot for a Texas style.  I'd would consider a second era if I could get one of those.

Otto, dont forget that while PRR leased our 2-10-4, during WWII, we picked up a few of Pennsys L1? mikados that worked on the eastern division.

The UP called theirs "four-eight-fours".  Original.
I think the CN's were called Confederations or something along those lines.

The irony here is that because of Santa Fe's enormous recognition factor among the masses, model manufacturers have been known to slap a big "Santa Fe" on just about anything, from NYC Hudsons to UP Turbines, because it just sells. I still own an old Trix (dare I say it?) K-4, factory painted Santa Fe I bought for parts thirty years ago....
Even today, I suspect it may be easier to sell a NYC Hudson lettered for Santa Fe than a Santa Fe Northern lettered for NYC or Pennsy...

Bachmann makes both of the big ATSF Baldwins, 2-10-4 and 4-8-4, in HO, using the same tenders and basic  boiler shells and have done well with them. They could easily do the same in N scale, even though the real Texas boiler is very slightly chunkier. This is a longshot, but I wonder whether buying interest for a road can be created by having a couple of core models available for that road? Did Athearn create a market for UP modeling with their UP steam? What about Fox Valley venture into the relatively obscure Milwaukee Road? Would more people be inclined to model ATSF if we had a couple of decent core prototypes like the 2900 and 5011's? Would serious modelers buy them? Would the masses buy them because it says Santa Fe in big letters on the side? Would the combination of the two be enough for Bachmann to make money? Bachmann, are you listening?  :D
Regards, Otto K.
