+1. Same what I hear. How long has this loco been run? I may just need some run time for the gears to mesh perfectly and limit the noise.

Yes, I agree - probably gear noise. I have run these particular Alcos quite a lot - couple hundred hours maybe? I put about twelve hours on them yesterday alone.

It's not a horrible racket, but it is a bit more noise than one typically finds these days. I have some BLI E6s and E7s that sound about the same.

Wow, good run time. There may be a speck of somthing there causing a click or they have warn to a permanent click. Maybe a quick look in the gear tower or a new gearset is in order.

In the old days, you could clean all of the grease from the worm and gears and put a dollop of Pearl Drops in there to clean up any burrs or irregularities in the mesh.
Rinse the toothpaste out and re-lubricate.

I have had in larger motors where the brushes come in contact with the armature ,the gaps between the commentators will make noise like tire treads on snow tires. Just a guess
