The Back Button
« on: September 09, 2013, 09:27:54 AM »
When I hit the back button (on my Mac at home or work and on my Samsung cell phone), the screen goes to the top and I have to hit back again to really move back to the previous screen.  Since I tend to search the forums by using the "unread posts since last visit," I use the back button a lot to visit different threads.

While it is a little bit annoying, it's certainly not the end of the world.  But, back should mean back, not up.  And, there's already a "Go Up" button at the bottom of every screen.  Is anyone else getting this?

This can occur when you use the search function, which takes you to a specific message by means of a bookmark on the page (if there's a # sign in the URL, anything that follows it is a bookmark reference). For some browsers, a jump to a bookmark is considered a discrete navigation step, even if it's done at the same time as navigating to a page. The "back" button steps you backwards through navigation steps, not pages. So, if you have navigated to a bookmark, clicking "back" takes you to the top of the page, not to the previous page.

That makes sense, but I'm only talking about navigating through the site as follows:

Log onto Railwire
Click on "Show unread posts since last visit"
Click on a thread, e.g., this The Back Button thread
Review post(s)
To go back to the list of unread posts, I usually hit "back" here.  But, instead of going back, I'm taken to the top of the page of the thread.  In fact, it just did it in this thread, despite there only being two posts!

Anyhow, if I am alone on this, I'll survive.  I do find it odd that it happens on two computers and my cell phone, though, if no one else is experiencing this.

Thanks,
DFF

I noticed this over the weekend also, while using Safari on my iPad.  Every thread required me to hit the back button twice to be returned to the "Unread Topics".

Frustrating.

Welcome to the new "Computer problems" forum topic. I told Tom if he created it I knew a bunch of friends that would join.

Sounds like the common thread is Apple products.

Back button worked/works fine for me.  (Safari 6.0.5, OS X 10.8.4)

But I did have issues with slow response times again over the weekend: 10-15 sec latencies on many occasions...

It's not just apple. IE does it also. Has nothing to do with searching. The back button just takes two hits to get you back to the page you just came from. It's been doing that for a long time with me. Just decided to deal with it.

I use both IE 10 and Chrome, and neither one have this problem.

It doesn't do it all the time. That is why I never worried about it. It's just an odd glitch. One day it will do it on every page. Today I just checked and it worked fine.

I think its a smartphone thing. At times I expect mine to act just like my PC but alas, it doesn't. But even on my PC if I use the "Go Down" feature and then the back button it does the same thing as opposed to scrolling down then hitting the back button.
