S-1s and S-2s -- how much difference?

Considering we are now getting deluged with Alco S switchers, what are the differences between the 4 kinds and can either of the new Atlas or Bachmann switchers be modified to resemble the other kinds?
(I'm afraid the NH version of these things will be the orange and blahhhhh paint scheme which means I'd have to strip it -- and if I do that I want to try to make an S-1)

Both the side radiators and the roof top grill are shorter on the ALCO S1 and S3.  Not sure how much would be involved with the shortening of them, though.

;) I guess it is my age, but when I see S-1 or S-2, I think steam locomotives not the ALCO diesel switchers.  Please for we more seasoned modelers specify in the title.

The S1 was 1 foot shorter than the S2. The difference being the length of the radiator?
Both rode on Blunt trucks.

The S1 and S3 were essentially the same, but the S3 rode on AAR trucks
The S2 and S4, likewise.

I was planning on buying the Atlas S2 and seeing if I could swap out the trucks from, say, their VO-1000, to roll my own S4.
Cheers,
Scott

Apart from the already mentioned truck and radiator differences, the other big difference is the welded cabs on the S-3/4, whereas the S-1/2 have riveted cabs.  Windows are also slightly different, based on some photos I have seen.

The exhaust stacks were different between the S1/3 and S2/4 as well. The S2/4 had the larger stack with angled base; if I remember correctly.  As in this:

Looking at pix the problem with making an S1 out of an S2 would not be shortening the side radiator grill but putting in the extra side doors that would fill that new space.
I believe filing the stock exhaust stack or putting in a substitute ain't hard.
