They were one of the car types used by the Santa Fe to handle express traffic on lesser passenger trains, up to the late-60s.  While I can't speak for the accuracy of the Atlas car (at least not without some photos to compare... probably best left to ATSF modelers) express traffic was a very lucrative service, so much so that, when this traffic was lost when Railway Express Agency decided to ship by truck and plane that several railroads almost immediately filed for, and received, permission to abandon passenger service while a number of others succeeded in gaining train discontinuations.  Think of it as today's UPS by rail... a very profitable operation.

The givaway to express service (since it doesn't say it on the car) is that there are two sets of capacities: one for regular freight service and one for passenger express service.

Wouldn't an express car also have steam lines?
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

Yep.  Possibly a new brake valve and usually some sort of express truck.

"...usually some sort of express truck."

Depends on what you consider an "express truck", especially so on 40' express boxcars.

There were a number of trucks that were approved for use on express cars that very much resembled typical freight car trucks.  While I suspect that those cars that had what likely was high speed trucks there were plenty of examples used on cars that would be nearly identical in appearance to freight trucks.

Below are but some of the examples...

High speed.

I guess I've just been drawn more to the cars with the longer wheelbase trucks.  And I'll freely admit I'm not up on my Durham & Southern cars from the turn of the last century.

If you look at a lot of the PRR Pass Car consists they had a lot of X29 Box Cars in Express Service.

I would gather the ATSF cars would have been used the same way and they would have been used as part of the headend cars.
