To strip or not to strip, paint that is??

I have done my fair share of custom paint work over the years but as I was thinking of one of my current projects I realized I have never stripped existing paint in order to paint the custom scheme.  I have a Centralia baggage car in silver that I want to repaint Pullman Green.  Do I really need to strip it down?  Or can I just paint over the silver like it is a primer??  I don't mind doing the extra work I just want to it to be worthwhile if I do it.

The thing with painting over existing paint is that any original graphics can show through (said graphics being slightly raised up relative to the base paint). I'd go ahead and strip with 91% alcohol.

Cheers,

Anytime I didn't strip paint and painted over it, I regretted it and ended up stripping (paint) anyways.

I just told my wife I am going to have to strip!  She looked at me and said "not here in the family room!!"  I said no, I mean a model train car.  She said, "as I said not here in the family room!!"

Tell your wife all the guys say you need to strip and be sure to post pictures.  Of the car and the repaint that is.

Have fun, Mark

This explains the returning cougars.

I recently learned of the term "puma" to designate a pre-cougar.

She sounds like my wife, who spends a not inconsequential amount of time muttering about my doll houses for men.  Maybe if I stripped more . . . freight cars . . . for her she'd understand.
