I would say the model is pretty good for a PPC, albeit Kato was a bit heavy-handed with the details.

Considering its uniqueness $30 doesn't seem to be a bad price!!!  Looks fairly nice... an opportunity for some to have these unique cars being ran.  If someone buys one I hope that they will take some better shots so that others can see what it looks like.

Have one on its way. Not that I model modern Amtrak... or Amtrak at all. However, the parlor car on the Starlight was the highlight of our travels last spring, so it will be a commemorative shelf queen. I wish Amtrak could afford to have one on all their long distance trains.

Did Kato offer this body style in another set previously?
I can't recall Amtrak selling Kato N before...if it has, do they eventually get offered by Kato later? I really want an earlier phase so I'm trying to determine if I should wait or buy this one.

http://www.pacificparlourcar.com/ it says they are all ex ATSF Cars. So if you want to break a El Capitan set this would be the only other way to get this car. Lok Models made one in the past.

Great price indeed!!  There was a better photo posted on Kato's website (through the announcement email), but the site seems to be overloaded now so I can't get it to load.  I'll try again in a bit and post the link.

Coast Starlight I believe.  If it's the car I'm thinking of, it's only accessible to the sleeper passengers.

They're indeed an interesting car. I rode one on the Coast Starlight in 2005, and my first impression was of a mobile home on rails (cheap faux paneling and furnishings), but at the time my interest was what was going on outside the car that mattered.
