Oh my gosh Carl!  I'll never live that one down.  But thank you for the complement on the engine!

Max- yes I did some more clean up, but only about 60 minutes worth of work.  The. White Urethane seems to show flaws that are not really there.  I truely appreciate the complement.  The tender came from my casting pot courtesy of Otto, the trucks are Bachman long vandy tender trucks

Excellent work.

One of the things I've toyed with making is 'standard' ATSF details; number boards, tenders, cabs...   

Looks like you've nailed it. But I would suggest that you consider selling some of the components like that separately that could be used on other locomotives to get a more accurate ATSF appearance.

Randy- I stay very busy with my two other businesses and 4 kids.... But for friends I am glad to make any of the parts for a custom build.


-Unlike many of my Passenger engines, She's a real work horse!


And here was the inspiration for my version of the 3800.  This was a customers husband in front of the engine. On several occasions, she sat and talked to me  about the Santa Fe railroad. She was nice enough to make me a copy of this picture which I noticed on here wall, here it is-

Jason is truly an inspiration to us all. I have successfully stretched a Kato Mike to a 2-10-2 based on a similar chassis Jason sent me to use as a guide. The mechanism is finished and it runs every bit as smoothly and quietly as a stock Kato 2-8-2. It's also fully serviceable with a removable bottom cover plate. So now I have a fully functional pair of these chassis to start with. In a couple of days I'll get the tenders built so I can have the entire mechanism assemblies roadworthy, and then I'll start on the boiler shell detailing which will be the fun part. I'm dying to see a pair of these beasts of burden double heading heavy freights on my layout!

I've modified a pair of Bachmann Northern pilots and added them to the chassis. They are visually better than the stock Kato USRA-type pilots but the vertical "boiler tubes" don't extend all the way to the top of the pilot beam as true ATSF pilots do. What I still need is a source of top quality castings for the cross-compound air pumps, feedwater pumps, and power reverse units. Any suggestions, folks?

Thanks Loren. The projects from the 4-12-2 to the 2-10-2's would not be possible or as successful if not for your contribution.

Runs beautifully, Jason!   I really appreciate seeing running action on engine projects.  I think that's a big
shortcoming of most modeling contests, including the big NMRA ones.  There is no accounting for whether
the model can actually run or pull worth a darn, and to me, that should count 50% of the model.  After all,
what good is it if it doesn't run well?  Who wants a prize-winning shelf queen?

Hmm... I was wondering what sound decoder as well. Couldn't help but notice the "competition's" (SP) boxcar behind the tender....  ;)

Jason, that looks and sounds great! Do you get decent starting motor control out of the TSU 750? I always have trouble between step 0 and step 1... Love the sound but not crazy about the starts....

Hey thanks again Otto,

I use a separate TCS M1 for motor contol which is located in the engine.  It eliminates wiring between the engine and tender and also protects the expensive TSU decoder.
