I would be interested in seeing the 1987 pic.

Not a closeup, sorry to say.

It's still clear in the photo that there are no UPS logos on the trailers and (what appears to be) UNITED PARCEL SERVICE on the lower sides.

Yes, it's spelled out.  Athearn did that scheme on their HO model recently... they should still have pics up.

Trainworx 40544-1-6 and 40544-7-12 are suppose to come with alphabet decals to spell out the UNITED PARCEL SERVICE, should you decide to do so.

Edit:  Incidentally, the convertor dolly can be hitched to the Trainworx 40-foot drop-frame trailers to create Rocky Mountain doubles.  The photo on the N Scale Vehicle Association's New Product page has a good view of the dolly.  http://nscalevehicles.org/new_products/2013_q2.php

And here is a Rocky Mountain doubles set up.

It's just as easy to create the artwork in an appropriate font and output it on decal film on a laser printer.

Isn't this what the yellow and red stripes were for?  To designate the trailers that had pintle hooks?

Yes, the trailers equipped with pintle hooks had the yellow stripes.  by the mid 1990s the yellow stripes were removed, and the reporting marks of the trailers equipped with pintle hooks in intermodal service were changed to UPOZ.

The trailers without the pintle hooks had the red stripes, and they retained their UPSZ reporting marks after the removal of the red stripes.

I have several photos of the UPOZ trailers on railcars in the 2000 to 2001 time frame, more than 25 years after they were built!

Edit:  The reporting marks for the pintle hook equipped trailers appear to have been changed to UPOZ prior to the removal of the yellow stripes.  I found a photo in my archive of UPOZ 80565 with yellow stripes in 1990.  The Intermodal Modeler's Guide referred to the change of reporting marks and the removal of the yellow stripes in the same paragraph, but did not specifically state they occurred at the same time.  I apologize for any confusion my initial response may have created.

I emailed Pat a few weeks ago, he said the first  12 numbers will be delayed some, and the last 6 will be out.

Is it just me or do they sit way too high on the dolly? As for my plans for what to do with them.

I don't know how many or how long they had these but I was shure I had seen one once. I had to search for a while to find a picture, and I was starting to think maybe I was mistaken. Now I just need decals.

Your layouts nice, but it needs more Conrail !

Nice white UPS Volvo truck with a sleeper cab. It is Kato, right?  :D
I think that this type of a tractor would look more at home with some longer (40 or 50 foot) trailer rather than the shorties, but since Ed's law applies, anything is possible.

So, are those just traditional pups like Athearn offers in N-Scale?

EDIT: Answering my own question...no.  Those, at very least, are beveled on the front vertical edges.

I wonder what would be the best approach to modeling those in n-scale?

I'm sure that there is a photo somewhere of a drop-floor pup being pulled by a Volvo tractor with a sleeper cab. Ed's law applies again.  ;)

The kingpin does not "seat" well into the fifth wheel plate on the dolly.  I will replace the plastic kingpin with an nipped Atlas track nail (my standard for all my N scale semi-trailers) and drill a 0.04 inch hole in the center of the fifth wheel plate on the dolly to assure the plate makes contact with the bottom of the trailer.  I think that will solve the riding too high look.
