The Most Expensive Railfan Trip.  Ever.

A week ago I headed up to New York's Southern Tier to hopefully catch the WNY&P's big ALCo's in action.  All started out well in Harrisburg, where I saw a westbound stack train meeting an eastbound Roadrailer, with the Central of Georgia heritage unit, facing westbound, holding the middle track with a long string of tanks cars.  Had to wait for the Roadrailer to pass to get the CoG unit.  Fortunately highway traffic was light.



A short time later I caught up to the stack train at Millerstown.

Then it was off to Renovo, where I captured an empty coal train heading west.





That's when trouble struck.  Rounding a curve north of Renovo, I hit a piece of shale in the roadway and detroyed my right-front wheel.  The guys at the dealership said they've never seen anything like it.  Mr. Wallet took a big hit...





It was a 70-mile trip on the spare donut to Olean, but I did manage to snap a couple of photos of a short NS transfer run at North Driftwood. That was the end of the day for railfanning.



Friday morning I rented a car while mine was being repaired, and found what I had been looking for - two 6-axle units getting ready to head to Emporium!  I chased them all the way to Keating Summit and the sun came out to boot!  This train made good time in the flats, I estimate 30-40 mph.  They were down to a slow walk at the top of the hill though.











After that chase, I went back north to Salamanca to vist the museum there - - which was closed (no surprise, it being a weekday in winter).



After picking up my car, it was well past time to be heading home, but I managed to catch a westbound not far from Canisteo.




Quite the (expensive) trip!

Sweet chase, love the old Alcos!

Well, today I had to pick my little sister up from school, and coming home I had to cross by the tracks; lo and behold there's a pretty black and green locomotive with the Gulf & Ohio logo sitting by the office...so I took a detour for some pics  I had to go pick her up from volleyball later on, and the LTEX SW1500 was sitting there. Doing some digging, looks like 2250 is a showcase unit for Gulf & Ohio's rebuild program; I'm guessing WCRS is thinking about sending their GP30's to be rebuilt.

Sucks even worse about the rim!  Hope you can find a match, or is it four new rims for your ride?  If so, that'll really cost you.  I guess you've discovered one of the cons about low profile tires the hard way.

Nice to know that some businesses are still around.  Somewhere I have a shot of an F unt on the beer line from the same time.  It' a quick from the car window and nor the greatest.  I was in Milwaukee to take the ferry from there to Ludington, Michigan.  Believe C&O ran that ferry.

VW wheel? Did you get the wheel and tire insurance? If so, think that may have just paid for itself.

If not, you maybe able to find a set on vwvortex in the classifieds.  I stalk there on occasion hoping for a set of 17s to put snow tires on.

It was a new wheel and 4 new tires (state inspection is coming up).  Insurance covered the wheel, one tire and the subsequent alingment. After my $500 deductible, they are still sending a check for $325.

I would have liked to have kept the wheel for a conversation piece, but nowhere to store it so I left it at the dealership.  The insurance company was satisfied with my photos and receipt.

Not sure when I'll do that again, but I did find some neat bridges north of Renovo, and the big Corning plant in Port Alleghany makes for a good photo prop.  The "incident" forced me to abandon my plans to check out the industries at Farmers Valley and Bradford, so there is incentive to try again sometime in the future.
