Weekend Update 3/10/13

Well, this weekend hasn't been the most productive, or the least productive, but yet it was a bit counter-intuitive.

I have been plugging away on my N-Trak module and was at the point where all I had to do was finish the ballasting and hook up peco solenoids to the terminal stip and solder up the cable to connect the module to the "Signal Box" (my module is GWR (UK) themed) and it would be ready to go the Greenberg show in Edison, NJ this coming weekend.

All was fine and dandy untill I found out that on Friday night, my cat decided to sleep on the module, and being a long-haired cat he sheds a lot.

Needless to say there was cat hair imbedded in the ground foam and no amount of brushing the module would help. Thus out came the 70% alcohol and away went the ground foam. Of course now I can replace the base layer of "earth"-colored fine ground-foam with "burnt grass", but it does mean that it will be a crunch to get the module completed in time.

Using a vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool along with (or in lieu of) a brush can sometimes help. The vacuum will pull the hair away from the module before static has a chance to pull it back down.

It actually wasn't a static problem. My studio remains cool/cold since there is a significant draft, thus static out there is none.
I did try a vacuum cleaner, but it actually did worse than the brush.
The brush got some of the hair, but it was easier to get out the putty knife and alcohol.

Finally had some considerable time in ACME Labs. Repacked some of my accumulated stocks of locos and cars to better store them with more storage available. I also cleaned off the workbench and also organized the existing projects to keep them...organized. Then I started a new project...

Filled the channel with 1/2" foam for a more shallow water pour.  Gonna get some thick dark olive drab for the Hudson silt.  Also experimenting with bridge height and seawalls.  Can't decide on a grimy black or rusty brown...



Berm wall finished except for the stone cap.  Still deciding on a cap solution.



Track is not laid, just wanted to see what the LIRR I.S. grade looks like alongside the PRR main on high.

Had the camera out, nothing particularly drastically new in this shot, but honing continues as I'm restaining the ballast on the main a darker color, removed all the original HO ladderstock in Flag and replaced it with GMM handrails.

I'm adding details to my SD40-2 build.  I added the winterization hatch, most of the lift rings, and grab irons on the body.  I left off the lift rings and long grab iron on the top of the rear.  I'll add those after painting.  I need to mask there, so need a flat surface for tape.

This is a close up of the Atlas winterization hatch.  From looking at photos, this appeared too long, so I shortened it a bit.


This grab iron in particular was a royal pain the rear.  It took forever to get right.  Damn near made me switch to HO . . .

I've been working on installing new rock faces on the rear facing side of the river.  Definately more difficult working on the side than the front facing side.  None-the-less making progress, slowly but surely.  Also, took a break from rock faces and decided to redo the trees and underbrush around the left tunnel on the layout.  Wasn't happy with my first attempt.  Heres the before and after:
