My quick search through the intertubes indicates that these cars were built starting in 1972.  (Source: http://www.smd.cc/canstock_status.htm)
Any dissenting opinion?

I have to admit that I am a bit confused about this design. The Spring Mills site shows a car objective diagram from the B&O.
http://www.smd.cc/images/Car%20Objectives.jpg

It states that beyond 6 rolls, the forklift can't turn. So they design a car with an offset door, but then load the extra 2 rolls by the doors. Why not just put 2 rolls in the doorway of a normal car? Thoughts? Perhaps this was due to the weight of the metal rolls, and they wanted to keep it over the trucks?

These cars made it to the Beer Line in service to Continental Can, but I am not modeling that portion of the line. Might still pick one up for fun.

Best wishes, Dave

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I hope they get the ride height correct on this new model.

Probably order one or two of these, like Dave said, just for fun.

The need for load restraining devices (movable bulkheads, basically) necessitated the change.  Follow the dashed lines in the B&O digram here:  http://www.smd.cc/images/Car%20Objectives.jpg

If you load the rolls in the doorway, and have them secured with LRD's, then the single rolls flop around in space.  I suppose an extra pair of bulkhead could have been installed, but load time would have suffered.

Thanks for the reply and explanation Mike. I had meant to provide that link, but messed it up.
