Would anyone know the prototype length of the 1500 gallon fuel tank used on the Milwaukee Road GP38-2s?

Tom,

I looked through all my references but couldn't find any specific info on this. Can you just eyeball it from photos? It looks to be a bit longer than two handrail stantions. A really small fuel tank! What scale are you doing this in?

Best wishes, Dave

Thanks...it is about 1/2 the length of the 3k one I guess.

This is a 1/29 scale model.

I would concur with your logic and math skills.  Be sure to check out some photos (of course). It sits pretty far back from the front truck compared to the 1700 gallon tank.

Are you a member of the Milwaukee Yahoo Group?  I could throw a line out for you and see if there are any nibbles.

I did a search on the Milwaukee Yahoo groups (although calling people from Milwaukee Yahoos seems a bit redundant), and got conflicting results.

  • First of all, people asked questions about the tanks but gave them capacities from 1500, 1600, and 1700 gallons. The 1500 gallon capacity seems correct (as noted in Fred Hyde's book).
  • One person stated that there is a 1 ft/200 gallon rule of thumb, which would yield a tank that is 7.5 ft long. This seems very close in my opinion.
  • In another post,  Fred Hyde stated 9.5 ft, but he seemed to be measuring from an Atlas model (odd). This seems too long for the 1500 gallon tank.

I would try 7.5 ft and see how it compares to the handrail stantions.
Oh, and photos or it never happened!  :)

Did Walther's do this tank on their Proto 2000 units or is it larger.

Maybe someone can measure the model.

Now you need to find out how long the air tank is so you can determine the length of the fuel tank.

Well actually yeah. The air tank is the same for all models right?  Should be a good reference point to figure everything out.

Please tell me that you aren't going to abuse the beautiful Milwaukee Road scheme into a god-awful Soo bandit!  A little respect, please!  :tommann:
