Didn't he already use PVC quarter round molding?!

That was my take on it too Peteski.  These PO's these days aren't much for attention to detail...

Looks like quarter round primed MDF.

Still should be a smooth enough finish.

Hmmm... to me that looks like the foam-like texture of an extruded PVC molding.  :?
I guess we'll have to wait to verify what was actually used.

Sorry for the delay guys. I did this quickly last night before packing for a trip and there wasn't any Internet access over the North Pacific this afternoon. On dry land now waiting for a 3 hour delay to the next flight.  The molding was purchased at Lowes. It has a very smooth primed finish, and as Peteski notes a bit of a  foamy interior. It's not mdf but my quick search of Lowes via my phone only added unhappiness to my day do I can't tell you what it is right now.  I post some more info next Tuesday when I get back home.

Best wishes, Dave

That's why I never use any power saws.

Hmm... I'm happy to
report that Kiz still has
all twelve fingers...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

We have a polydactyl cat. He has 24! Made it to my laptop, still can't figure out what I bought at Lowes. This internet thing....it will never catch on. Thanks for the help everybody, but I can't help but wonder how many people read this thread just to see if I hurt myself!  :P

Best wishes, Dave

Dave,

I would use a 2x block exactly the same length as the pipe. Run the block along the rip fence and hold the pipe with a soft jawed bar clamp parallel with the block and pipe.  The pads of the clamp spanning both the block and the top part of the pipe. Sorry my description isn't very clear.
Or if you want, send me the measurements and I'd be glad to rip them and send them to you.
I owe you one for the Erie built pictures you found for me.

You guys do realize that I solved this problem on page 3, right? Quarter round moulding. Five minutes on the chop saw and it looks great.

Jim, glad to help you out with your Erie-built project. Thats how we Milwaukee Road guys roll!

Best wishes, Dave

This may be a bit tough to describe, but the problem with butting PVC pipes together for silos is that the real grain silos intersect each other. When you butt tubes together, you see 180 degrees of a 360 degree object. Silos kind-of intersect each other so that the circular face you see is about 120 to 140 degrees and then the next round face starts. A good example of this would be to look at the Walthers grain silos or the cement silos.

I was able to do this with PVC grey conduit by cutting the individual silos to length and then milling flats about 3/16" deep at 90 degree angles on 3 sides of each tube except the end tubes (silos) which only get two corners milled. This gives you the prototypical look of concrete grain silos. The flats butt nicely together and you get more surface to glue the silos together this way. I used my table saw with a dado to mill the flats in the sides if the conduit. Any seams can easily be filled after assembly with thin CA adhesive.  I painted mine with a flat white fine texture finish spray rattle can for the real looking finish.

Using a table saw and dado does include the risk of cutting off body parts but I survived it.

Whatever it is, I'm pretty sure it isn't any type of wood composite. From what I remember, last time I fondled these at Lowe's, they weren't primed but they just had a smooth plastic surface.  The surface finish of those pieces should be comparable to the surface of your PVC pipes.  I think those moldings are PVC or possibly urethane.  I would lean towards PVC.

A few corrections:

Well, the fact that I am able to type this is proof that I still have all at least one of my fingers.

You guys do realize that I solved this problem on page 3 page 2, right?

The result looks good Dave.
