Could wooden quarter round molding be used for the partial circles?

Completely forgot about this. And if you don't want to use wood, they also make vinyl quarter round for industrial floor applications.

Nice tip on the PVC/wood quarter round! Great idea, as I want to avoid the saw idea if at all possible.  I will take a run to the HD at lunch today. Thanks everybody for the brain storming session. This is what The Railwire is all about!

Best wishes, Dave

I like this because it doesn't require massive amount of material removal. We are working on a coal flood loader silo kit that required cutting a "tunnel" for the train to go through at the base of the PVC pipe -with the pipe being vertical while sawing! Using a jig of course. If your blade is sharp it cuts like butter. But what if you put a wooden dowel the exact size of the internal dimensions and make it stick out about 8" to 12" from each end from your pre-cut pipe as handles for your precious fingers and maybe even spot glue it at each end so it won't spin (with the pipe being a bit longer too). Set your table saw fence to the width of the pipe you want to keep. This would be fast and painless, except for maybe the cost of the dowel for four pieces.

I don't if this will work with PVC, but it has over metal and wood forms.  Take a thin plastic sheet place in boiling water and place on top of the PVC. You now have the radius. Let cool, cut brace, and glue.  If you know the radius and height you can cut the sheet to size before forming.  Just a suggestion.  Love the layout and look forward to your progress.

When I was building architectural models, I always used about four sheets of very heavy paper wrapped around a pipe of appropriate diameter. Impregnate the paper with white glue, let dry, and it's as strong as I ever needed.

Well, the fact that I am able to type this is proof that I still have all my fingers. I went with 5/8 inch quarter round molding and it worked great. Five minutes on the chop saw lead to this.

The full silos are 1 inch inside diameter PVC, which yields a 1.25 inch outside diameter. The materials were something like $6. I cleaned the pipe with Bestine (no joke) and cemented it together with PVC cement. A dab of construction adhesive on the quarter round and we will be on to the next step. Thanks everyone for the ideas, with a special thanks to Roger for the first suggestion of using molding.

Best wishes, Dave

Go To Lowes or Home Depot an buy a Pc of Plastic Quarter/Round Plastic trim.
Buy a 6 or 8 Ft pc, for a couple bucks. Save thoes fingers or other body parts relative to Table-Saw height.
Good Luck!

Now you should be able to skin the wood quarter round with some very think sheet styrene so that when the whole thing is painted it has a consistent look.

That was my take on it too Peteski.  These PO's these days aren't much for attention to detail...
