Using grout is a good idea; it appears to have some real "substance" to it, and is probably fairly easy to work with(?)

In the background is the building with no name  :)

It looks like Pinkham's Pallets to me.   :D

Hmmm, interesting... I had the same issue with a post-2004 Atlas SD-7. Except, the universal was "split" on the shaft. Replaced it, but it is slipping again. Either split again or it was never fully seated to begin with... further investigation is needed.

Mike

Yeah I have had to replace quite a few on my SD7/9 and C628/C630. Most came from the manufacturer cracked. Its the weak link on these locomotives. The wood chopstick works well. Good excuse to go get Chinese food.

problems with a large number of Atlas C630's that I have... drive shafts that slip at the connection to the flywheels making movement problematic if not impossible. Pretty sure that a little targeted CA will fix the problem

The problem is almost certainly split male universals.  Atlas is aware of this problem with the C-630 and will supply replacement part $540104.  Another option is to use the male universals from Northwest Short Line #485-6.

Chris,
I actually like the lighter edges. Looks better to me, like the gravel and or soil was finer and loose, much like I imagine it would be.

Spent this morning creating parts for a new helix for the Allegheny Eastern. The current one is not satisfactory. The new one will have slots to keep the code 80 flex track in line and at the proper radius...

Okay, so here's my "real" entry for this week.

SP&S #603 is done at last.   Construction time was from 9/1/2012 - 12/20/2012.

I decided to use #603 instead of 604 just this past week,
after looking at more photos and deciding 603 was closer to what I built, and because #603
was one of the last ones scrapped (in 1949) so it is the closest fit to my 1950s theme.

The decals were gifted to me by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

Since last post, I added cab shades and some light gray and white weathering powder.

More photos in the main SP&S 4-4-2 thread.  As always, a click on the photo will blow it up.

Max,

Nice looking model. What did you use for the cab shades and curtains?

Best wishes, Dave

EDIT: Never mind...I just read your project description more carefully. Tea bags,....who knew?

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Holy crap Max, that looks awesome!

I was following your thread last week and I have to admit, I cringed a little when you hacked the thing apart, especially with all the rough sanding marks on the metal boiler. But, damn, that came out perfect!

Nice steamer Max!!

So the world didn't end.  Yea team...

I spent some time working these for a friend.  Not a stickler for the prototype, but he wanted some passenger cars to go with his E8's I did in the blue a white for him a few years ago.  Working on a dome car as well for him.  Should have that done this weekend.

Also detailed and changed the number on this GP7 for another friend.  I added the spark arrestors, a high hood bell, and a new horn which was moved closer to the cab.  I should have asked him to let me change out the boxing gloves for MTL Z scale couplers...  :|

I stole the idea from Ian, but yeah it is pretty easy to spread with a butter knife. I think it works better at least 1/16" thick, it doesn't spread easy when you go thinner. (then again I may have mixed it wrong?)

You don't mix it. I put it on dry where I want it with a spoon or a small sifter. I then wet it with rubbing alcohol and add my matte medium.
I WANNA SEE THE BOAT MOVIE!
