HCD`s connected and trackage was begun!

Ran a few trains up and down and then worked on actually installing the track

Lines all drawn out for trackage

then we ran out of spikes............progess on the pennsy stopped, here`s the last 2

Here`s the reversing loop that will have to be cut out tomorrow this will go on the left and provide 3 loops back with 10 stub inbetween
basically just tripled our storage and have given us more room for the 400+ pieces of rolling stock

Here`s where we stopped for the night

Plan:

Our current yard has 600" worth of flex this is 3 times the size of that and much bigger than I thought it would be but bigger is better, and this will easily get the job done and is actually totally portable with the removal of a few screws!

Cody,
Everything looking great. Please keep us posted on how the helix is working out. My original layout design was from the tunnels at Spruce Creek to Tyrone on the PRR mainline with a two track helix on each end dropping down to staging on a lower level. I set that design aside due to the complications of the helix's and came up with another one with staging in a different place. After seeing what you did with the unitrack I am seriously thinking about going back to the original design.

thanks
Sam

Helix is working fine and would highly recommend the kato unitrack helix

The return loop section to be attached to the HCDs

Planning out the track

Laying out the 3 return loop tracks

the 3 return loops all laid out

did all the wiring for the new mainlines, used suitcase connecters and terminal blocks. The wiring is done for future signaling

was up till about 3am doing all this and the little helper kaydee was a little tired

Cody, unless it is optical, that support angle brace looks awfully close to the outer track for taller rolling stock?

Cody, Thanks for the recommendation on the unitrack. I happened to be in Pittsburgh today and stopped by Esthers and picked up a few pieces to experiment with. My greatest concern was the super elevation and weather that would cause a problem pulling toward the center while pulling a 25 to 30 car train up the helix. My plans are now to procure enough track to make two, three loop helix's and connect them together on a small shelf I have available. Again Thanks

No problem with super elevation pulling 75 Atlas 55 ton hoppers up the helix with 3 atlas TrainMaster  but had to add a GP7  pushing to get it up. Would recommend when planing to use the outer loop for going up. Locos have a easier time on the outer loop going up.

Yes its a little close pulling it out tomorrow and chopping a bit off

Kinda sucks when your running a GG1 Pantograph up and hear bang and the clash of couplers cause the pantograph got stuck , a really oh s&*% moment  :o :scared:

Haven`t posted in a bit been busy on these L1`s

Staging is mainly done with 5 reversing loops
the stubs still need good track

We`ve finished this this small corner and finalized the bridge position

Beautiful. I guess I painted our smoke boxes a bit light. Is that what they look like. All the color photos I have show dirty to more dirty. Can't really see what color they are.

Man, had to dig this out of the annals of the Layout Engineering forum.  Before going to the RailBQ this year, I stopped by Cody's with some brass and did a little running.  First up, a DD1 waits in the yard while a T1 passes behind on the mains:

Next, the T takes a spin on the turntable while an L1 waits for her turn:

Thanks for hosting, Cody!

Geez, has it been that long?  Thanks for digging this thread back up, Eric.  Now, Cody, get back to work on the layout and updating this thread!

Nice job on the snappers!

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."
