Again, you're good.  All of the cars in the first release except for the Rutland are in their 1947 as-built schemes, so the service (or new) dates match the 1947 build dates.

Looks like possibly one more release of 7-foot door schemes late in 2013 before the next body variation?  The remaining original-owner roads with 7-foot doors after the second release will be CG, CMO, CNW and NKP.

Thanks Bryan and Jason, that's exactly what I was looking for.

You can backdate the car by renumbering to 8700-8725 and a 1953 build date, but you would have to change the door as well to a 5-panel Superior -  which is doable, but you would have to acquire an undecorated model to get the door and paint to match.

Sounds like a fun project- seems simple enough for someone like me who has never modified any rolling stock, I'll definitely look into it.

I would think that the ones(BM, MEC, LV)with the '47 build date, would have the old roof with the quantity 10 number of stiffeners, as Atlas advertises. Looking at the pictures on the Atlas web site it appears that they don't.

Anybody have one of these in hand to confirm what is going on.

I don't know the specifics, but I know that Atlas has done all the research regarding which roads/schemes had which roof, door and brake wheel.  They have tooled (so far) two roofs, three doors and three brake wheels, and so far they are sticking to prototype.

The 12 stiffener roof came as early as '48.  I did some research when the Atlas car photos started appearing and wrote a little bit about it here:

I would agree that the '47 car should have 10 stiffener roofs but only pictures can tell for sure.  I don't see it as a real big deal since the rest of the Atlas car isn't a 1947 car either.  In fact, I don't know why Atlas bothered tooling the 10 stiffener roof as it seems like a waste of money (especially if they aren't using it when they should).   There were several design changes through the years and I put the Atlas car closer to a 1953 build.  If you are interested in the changes, they are explained in the link above.

Got my Lehigh Valley one yesterday and all as I can say is wow awesome model will be getting plenty more as they are released hopefully they will do some Western Maryland ones.

Also noted on that roster and through photos, all of these cars would have the 12 stiffener roof.

Won't count on seeing any of those road names any time soon on the 7' door variations. In total between the CG, CMO and CNW, there were 35 cars produced. I'll save those road names for the bigger lots. Aaaaaand, the NKP car had 12-panel sides...

That's actually good news, as it implies the 6' or 8' door variation is slated for the third release.  More parts for more kitbashing, in addition to the new roads and schemes.

I am looking forward to seeing the B&M and MEC repaints. And I am away from my references at the moment, but I think some of the Rutland cars ended up on the BAR roster.

A question for Cory:

On the Atlas website (Oct. 5, 2012 announcement), the 2nd release WP cars (50 001 161 (WP 20821) and 50 001 162 (WP 21223)) are listed as being brown, black & white, with the white presumably being the lettering as shown in the artwork.  A posting in the fourth message down the page on this link http://www.zcentralstation.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&func=view&catid=4&id=9607&Itemid=212, which was sent to me a couple of days ago by Jason (wcfn100), includes a quote from noted freight car historian Jim Eager indicating that these cars (series 20821 - 21400) were lettered in silver with a black and silver herald.

Would you please confirm whether these cars will be lettered in white or silver?  I can accept that white may be correct but if, indeed, they are being lettered in white could you please provide a reference to convince me why I should accept the contradiction of information from a historian I trust and order the pair from my dealer?
