CN assigned their M420W's to Moncton for maintenance (probably Montreal, too) and they basically roamed east of Winterpeg. Would have been pretty rare for one to sneak further west than that. CP was the same with their MLW's after the early 70's.

They road on ALCO B trucks but the P&W had now RS3s to trade in... the early group of units were leased from the D&H and were returned to the D&H after their lease expired, a couple others were acquired secondhand but after the M420s were delivered.

This isn't related to an ill-fated project from WP Railshops/ Prototype Models from about 12 years ago, is it?  'Cause I'd really like to get the M-420 shell I ponied up $56.75 for.  Just saying...

Totally different company and product!  Absolutely no connection to WP Railshops/Prototype Models.  Recently, Jeff has done a variety of projects (Dofasco trucks, M-630, C-425, NSC box car, CP Mini-box, and now the M-420) of interest to the Canadian Railway Prototype Modeller.  All are totally new products and state of the art tooling.  Some of the finest resin cast and etched models I have seen.  The M-420 is totally out of my era, but I have already reserved one.

Five for me too - no engine screams northern British Columbia more than the M-420.  The eight M-420s and eight M-420Bs were seen regularly on the lines to Dawson Creek, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson.  I have had five Atlas B36-7 chassis waiting for years.

While mine will be completed as BCR units, I will be interested to see fellow Railwire modellers complete them for CN and other roads.

By the way, the correct model designation is M-420.  All MLW model designations were hyphenated, and the suffix 'W' was never applied because the model was only ever avaialble with the wide cab.  Other models were M-420R, M-420B and M-420TR.

MLW offered the same cab as an option for the M-630, which was built for the BCR as model M-630W.

The shell looks great, but it is too old for me.  I'm moving towards even a more modern fleet.  I may divest of my GP40W units.  Change is in the wind, and it is not just the remnants of Sandy...

Great..   Now I need a 'second era' for my early 2000s north end layout :facepalm:.   Should it be late 1970s , 1980s or 1990s :??    Either way I shall commit to three M-420s for sure.

The last four M-420s were retired in February 2003 so they fit your current era.

If you are looking for a second era to alternate with from time to time, there are a fair number of RTR locos and cars available for the 1970s.

Yep... P&W returned the D&H RS-3s becuase they got the M420s.
