Lowes and (I think) Home Depot both stock the 1" gray tape in the hardware department. You can get the 1/2" at automotive supply houses, especially shops doing a heavy trade in auto body supplies. It is the adhesive of choice for exterior chrome and badges.

Pretty much exactly what I do for track,but instead of Tacky glue,I use Weldbond adhesive/Elmer's 50/50 with water and alcohol.Also,instead of T pins,I use big plastic map pins.I use water based contact cement for foam to wood or foam to foam,I just brush it on and screw it together wet.Holds like iron.I tried the contact cement for cork,it works well,but since I sand my cork and sand in superellevation,I found it was too gummy to work with.If not for that,I'd use it..

SO I looked at Lowes.com at lunch, and nothing close to this comes up.  I can get all sorts of single sided weatherstripping tape though.  Guess I'll have to look in person.

Home Depot carries a Scotch -3M product called outdoor mounting tape that is grey and Claim weather resistant. It dosesn't have the same product numbers as quoted by. DKS.  Guess I'll have to keep looking.

That's the stuff, Philip. The product numbers vary by the packaging; the example David gave you was the industrial/professional reel. The consumer package is distributed by a different product group.

alrighty (and with apologies to Pud for the semi thread jack) I looked at it again this AM on the way to work (My HD opens at 6AM).  It's definitely wide enough at 1 inch, but it's on the shallow side of 1/8th inch thick on the roll.  that means it's not really cork roadbed height (!) but I'am about to lay some secondary track fro the bulk of the layout, so the lower height would be prototypical.

Pud, this could work for you very well.  Just need to get the plans for Dave's super cutter rig, and off you go!

I ordered some from Uline to evaluate; my concern is the denser foam may be a problem for the cutting jig--we'll see.

I used white glue to secure the cork roadbed to the foam, priming the foam with two coats of cheap tan latex paint first.  I want to try the camper shell tape trick but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Dave, did you get a chance to verify if this or the outdoor tape from HD or Lowes will work in your cutting fixture?   Want to use this method on the LIRR I.S.

Yes, it does work in the fixture--barely. The tape is a lot tougher and stickier, so the blade has to be brand new, or else it jams.



I've already applied the tape to my new layout, although I didn't bother using the cutter--I just laid it on as-is. If need be, I'll trim the edges with a knife later.
