Any idea when the IBT cars went into service? I see them all the time now, but can't remember is they were around in the late 90's.

I seem to remember them in the late 90s on the WC in southern Wisconsin.  Before that we usually saw MD&W cars as opposed to IBT.  FWIW the Exactrail website lists them as coming around in the mid-90s.

You made a good point earlier about not being able to examine the model in your hands before a purchase, if you must buy direct.  But, seriously, what's the difference between buying direct from ER or buying from an online vendor?  You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but the idea of boycotting a model manufacturer for their decision to deal direct with the modeler doesn't make sense.  That issue should be between ER and the hobby shops.  Now, if you don't like the quality or the price, that's a different story.

However, the waffle boxcars are the best looking freight cars that I have.  I am still enamored with them when I run them.  Yeah, yeah, the roof... whatever, ER says it will make it right, so that's a non-issue for me at this time.  You are missing out on great-quality freight cars that you need on your 1985 layout.  Those Southern waffle boxes were all over the place in the 1980s.  So, between you and me, any campaign to punish a manufacturer of high-quality products that I use doesn't sit well with me.  I don't want to see ER fail.

I don't NEED any of the Alcos, but since we have a sizable Alco contingent here, I am glad they are out.

Some of the covered hopper schemes interest me, but I just don't have the room on my layout for them.  So I'll pass.

As to the ER cars - I could use a couple of the hi-cubes (CN?IC and WSOR), and I really want some of the waffles.  While I agree with Ed's larger point that ER's new sales model violates norm, and contributes to the assault on the local hobby shop, most o fmy purchases these days are on-line form Chuck, so I don't do much trying before I buy.  I would much rather get them from Chuck or MBK, but if this is the way I can get a model I've wanted for 20 years, then I will eventually do it.

What I'd really like is a better explanation from ER as to why they went the way they did, and an acknowledgement that hey are going against a VERY strong grain in the hobby.

Argh, Atlas. On the 4750 page you include columns for build and other dates but don't complete them. WTH? You got the data (it's on the car), why not help the customer make purchasing decisions without chasing things down?
