Would it be very out of place to run Atlas 50' flats with 24' trailers on a layout set in 1971?

Keep on answering my questions... because I'll keep on posting 'em.

Unlikely for 24-foot trailers on 50' flatcars in 1971, and rare for 40-foot trailers on 50' flatcars.  The 85' TOFC flats already had been in service for 15 years by then and the 89' TOFCs were imminent.

In 1971 you'll need a lot of 40 ft trailers, as that was the standard length then.  They just weren't seen often on 50 ft flatcars, as most of those were back in general service, rather than hauling trailers.  There were a few still in service, though, so if you want one, you can run it.  At least two GN 50 ft cars went through Pasco yard in 1973, and one of my NP books has an undated photo of an NP 50 ft TOFC car with an ACI label,

Trailers that would work for 1971:

Atlas 40' is a model of a fiberglass/plywood body. Thats why you see a strip of bolts along the top edge. This was very popular in the 70's.

Trainworx 40' trailers. Beaded, drop frame and the UPS trailers work will for the late 60's through the 70's

Athearn Fruehauf Z-Van and X-Post 40' trailers. These are the proper 96" width and feature wheeled dollies.

Wheel Works/S&R models 40 X post trailer. Not as nice as the Athearn X post, but you can get kits in bulk.

CinC 1973 28' Exterior Ribbed Semi-Trailer. Nice metal kit that offers some variety. Only pup trailer thats 96" wide.

Avoid using these:
MTL Fruehauf 40, 45, 48' trailers. These are 102" wide which was not legal until 1982.

Con-Cor 40, 45' trailers. These are also 102" wide.

Atlas Pines 45, 48' trailers. These were not introduced until the early 80's.

Atlas 24' trailer. This is a mix of old (single door latch, low roof, short) with a more modern fiberglass/plywood body. The tandem axle is especially strange.

Athearn pup trailers. These are all 102" wide.

Deluxe 53' tailers. These were not produced until the 1990's.

I believe the BLMA cars (F89-J) appeared starting in 1966.
