My Dad was often called upon for diorama duty.  His finest work, in his words, was the indian village he did with my sister.  It showed two different seasons (winter/summer) on either side of a creek. 

Love the Waupaca factory.  It's immense.  Try doing that in HO!

It seems that a lot of people out there hate/fear/dread ballasting. Its no wonder. Getting those tiny grains in just the place you want them can be a challenge. Using a more scale - sized ballast in N scale seems to complicate the problem. The results of this labor do seem to be worth it however.  ;)

I thought I would post my primitive method here. I have no new amazing techniques or solutions. I just wanted to show that its not all that difficult. Just like so many other things in our hobby, it just takes time, patience and what I call a "scale eye". I know that I should have some kind of youtube video to show my motions. I don't really have the ability for that just now. I hope that still shots will get my ideas across.

A good way to start, like many things in this hobby, is to research the prototype. Take a little time to note not only the color of the real thing, but how the chunks of ballast lie around the real tracks. Note how the ballast looks on mainline tracks versus sidings or even much less used industrial tracks, etc. Take pictures to refer to later. This may give you some goals as to how you want your model to look.

Please also note that we are dealing with track here that will only be seen from "one" side. I.E. This is a shelf layout. This does give one certain tactical advantages in scenery preparation, if you follow me.


Warning: This may the world's most boring posting. I think it is necessary however. I'm going to repeat my tasks for illustration. I'll try to inject a little humor to keep it interesting. I said I'd try...


So anyway, here we go.  For demonstration purposes, here is some Atlas code 55 track. The rear track is on HO cork (for that mainline "look") and the siding is smack on the plywood. The tracks were painted with rail brown.















Oh, I should mention that I am using Highball N scale "grey mix" ballast. I sifted my ballast through a simple tea strainer to remove the larger pieces. I keep these larger pieces in a different container for use later as talus or rip rap.














I start spreading the ballast in the time honored way by using a plastic spoon. Gently tapping it with a finger, the ballast falls upon the track. My first reaction was "Man this stuff is like powder!". Moving from the world of Woodland scenics' "fine" grade of ballast to this "closer to scale" size took some getting used to. In time, however, I find that it is easy to work with.


















I start by applying it between the tracks. I try to get about this much ballast or less between the rails. This is actually a bit too much. Note that I also applied some to the outside of the rails. Since the tracks are on cork (and higher cork at that) I have applied a bit extra to the outside.











Now I'll add some to the lower, or passing, track. By the way, this is not an official passing siding, hence I glued the track directly to the plywood. Here is a critical point: If you are ballasting tracks that are not on some kind of rise, like say cork, there is less "room" for the extra ballast to go. I suggest sprinkling a lot less ballast for tracks close to "plywood" level. This is especially true for industrial tracks.















This is about the "right" amount of ballast for the space between the rails. Sorry about the bad exposure:














Now some for the outside of the rails:













Eventually, I get to the point that I've spread enough ballast at enough height that I am ready for the spreading phase:












I have grown used to this artist's brush for spreading the ballast. It appears to be a 1/2 inch round - ended brush that has been used several times for painting, hence the bristles have spread out quite a bit. The bristles on it are very soft.











Now the fun part (read sarcasm here)! Here is the part that most people dread. I don't blame them. Spreading and shaping ballast, especially "scale size" ballast, can be as much fun as placing decals in a locomotive numberboard (also read sarcasm here)! I find that if I take it step by step, its not really all that bad. You may have to go back and repeat a few steps until you get the results you want. Its not any worse than that.

The concept that has really helped me in this phase is trying to use a "scale eye" when inspecting the ballast. Try to imagine yourself as a scale person. What may look like a tiny imperfection to us (and indeed they are), might look huge to a scale-sized person. I find that if I go back and do some reshaping (sometimes just a few more brushstrokes), a better result can be obtained.

Also, if it really bothers you, try just working with a small area until you can't stand it anymore. Unless you have pets, small children, or frequent aftershocks, the ballast will stay put. You need not glue it right away.


So anyway, with the brush at something close to 70 degrees to the tracks, I begin spreading the ballast. I like to start between the rails and "snowplow" the ballast as I go along. Keep in mind that in some situations, this will be TOO Much ballast. I think it all depends on how far above the "base"  the tracks are. Since I am using HO scale cork under the mainline, I wanted extra ballast to drape over the sides of the cork. Kinda like this:














I'd also like to suggest another way to hold this particular style of brush. You might also try holding it perpendicular to the tracks shown in the picture below.





This way, you can knock off ballast not just between the rails, but also some on both sides at the same time.
Below, you can see the result (on the right-hand track):











Sorry about the out of focus shots - but you get the idea, I hope. You can see the results of my first few sweeps between the ties on the upper (mainline) track. Note that I used sideways strokes, not an all in one motion, for this first sweep. You may be able to tell that there is a couple problems with the area between the rails. One, there is too much ballast on the tops of the ties. Second, if you look on the left side of the fuzzy picture, along the upper track's inside rail, you may notice small piles of ballast that ride above the ties on the inside of the rail. These piles tend to form in a wave - like pattern near or in between the ties. These also tend to form on the "spike heads" on each tie. I call this effect "windrows" after the effect wind can have on cold snow as it swirls around stationary objects. Here is a better picture to show you what I mean by windrows. Focus your attention on the upper track's left side, between the rails:









At this point you may want begin to work the ballast on the outside of the rails. For demonstration, I will attend to the above two problems first (windrows and ballast on top of the ties - as seen, however fuzzily, below):










I like to attack the windrows (ballast that rests along the sides of the rails) by using some gentle strokes at a low angle. I only use the bristles at the very low edge of the brush, not all the brush's bristles. This picture attempts to show windrow elimination:



I do this first as this windrow ballast is knocked down on the tops of the ties.

This leads to trying to correct the second problem. However primitive, unprofessional, and non-railwire-ist it may look, a simple rub of one's finger along the inside of the rails will knock a lot of this ballast from the tops of the ties. Sounds silly, but it does seem to work. (Please note that I'm not trying to give anyone here any sort of bad hand gestures in these pictures  :))





 





There is a youtube video out there that shows a fellow ballasting HO sized track. In it, he taps the tops of the rails with the brush handle to knock this ballast from the tietops (is that a word?). It seems to work well for him in HO. I have tried this. I have not had great success with that. Your results may vary. I find rubbing the area between the rails more effective in this situation with such small ballast pieces.

Anyway, this rubbing will knock some of the ballast right back up on the side of the rails - making more windrows.  :facepalm: Like this:




So, keep brushing it back down. Then try rubbing between the rails again. Then... It may take a few tries, but soon you will get the look you want. (No really, you will) After about three of the above repeated techniques, I wound up with this:







Ok fine, but if you look at the tracks from a low angle, such as in the above view, you'll see that your actions of clearing the outside rails has formed some "sand dunes" along the outside of the ends of the ties. Secondly, you may notice that the ballast does not quite have that prototype look. I strive for the ends of the ties rising just slightly above the ballast level. Remember to look at your ballasting from many angles and with your "scale eye". Its not just the windrows, or the ballast on the top of the ties, our third problem to watch for is what I call "dunes".

To help flatten these dunes, I'm going to tilt my brush at a very low angle and "pat" the dunes flat as I go along. Try to draw the brush away from the tracks ever so slightly as you do this. Also, make sure the ballast if forming the look of the prototype you want as you go. These next few shots show me trying to flatten some dunes along the sides of the track and drawing just a little ballast from the ends of the ties.

Of course, flattening the dunes can make your ballasted area too wide. There is sometimes a careful balancing act here between flattening these dunes and the width, or distance the ballast extends from the track. You may find that you want to sweep the ballast back towards the tracks and retry your flattening. You may also want to move some of the ballast sideways to a less ballasted area to help correct this. I think a key idea here is not sprinkle too much ballast on the tracks initially. There is a learning curve here. It takes a few tries to get the hang of ballasting. Do not despair if you find you have too much ballast. Vacuum it up, with a clean vacuum - so you can reuse it, and start again.

Below is my attempt to flatten the dunes:












Always inspect your work from many angles, and again, with your "scale eye". Be sure to check if you are knocking some ballast back towards the rails causing windrows or getting some on top of the ends of the ties and correct accordingly.

Ballasting part two: (Deux):





Next, lets turn our attention to the "other outside" of the rails. For those of you modelling tracks that will be visible from both sides, you can repeat the above steps for the opposite side. For shelf modelers, the opposite side of the track's looks may not be so critical.

If we look from above (remember I said to view your ballast from different angles), we note the opposite side of the mainline tracks needs some attention:








For this far side, I'm back to my more perpendicular angle to the tracks. I'll be brushing away from the tie ends. The trick here, since this side will not be so visible to us shelf modelers, is to mostly just expose the ends of the ties from the ballast.








True to form, this action formed dunes on the outside of the tracks. Its a good idea to view the tracks from a low angle like this to keep track of your shaping attempts.

Also, you may note several odd pieces of ballast here and there along the tops of the ties and the sides of the rails. My philosophy here is that I do not go after EVERY tiny piece of ballast. Some get washed away by the gluing phase. And likewise, some get washed onto the tracks from gluing. Ballasting in general is not an exact science. This standard may not be acceptable to some, but it is good enough for me. With a layout my size, I figure I do not have enough time to worry about EVERY tiny piece of ballast. (I have ways to attend to them later  ;)) I find there will always be some grains that get away from you, no matter how good a job you do on shaping the ballast.

So anyway, here is a couple pictures to show you the dunes on the outside of the upper (mainline) track.













I flatten the dunes, again, by holding the brush at a low angle and "patting" the dunes flat. Afterwards, check that the tie ends did not get ballast moved back on to them.

Now its time for that second (or lower) track. Again I start in the middle of the track hold the brush at an 70 degree (or so) angle to the tracks and begin sweeping the ballast from between the rails:













...leaving this.



Now, look carefully between the ties. You may notice some bare spots here and there between them. In the real world, mud and earth do sometimes "well up" between the ties, depending on how mush maintenance the prototype can afford. This is, after all, a siding and not the mainline. I decided to add just a little more ballast to correct some of these bare spots. Just a pinch will do:











After sprinkling some ballast on the bare spots, we are left with this:




What a mess! I'll do my finger trick next, as I did above, and displace some of the ballast pieces from the tops of the ties:









After a couple passes, I'm left with this:





So... Rinse & Repeat (not literally)...







After the above actions, I'm left with this:




I could do more here, but this meets my criteria (for now). I'm now going to work on the outsides of the rails. Again, I'm going to hold the brush at the angle below and brush lightly towards the outside of the tie ends:










My result after all the above:







Now, I'll attack the dunes left from the above action. Again, I will hold the brush at this severe angle and gently (I said gently) flatten the dunes in this manner:









I dunno, still a bit too much stray ballast for my tastes on this lower track:

The cycle can repeat until you get the results you want. I have one more trick. When I get the ballast shaped the way I'm happy with, I give the inside of the non - visible rail (remember this is a shelf layout) a quick ballast removal. Considering that this inner side of the rail is where the flanges tend to hit, I'll give the closest rail's inner surface a quick rub with my fingernail. Primitive? You bet! But it does seem to work. Its worth doing as it will make your trains more quiet as they pass. I.E. Clear the flangeways!





Don't forget to go back and search for errors. A case in point: Sometimes the ballast gets a bit too thin in spots. Besides the above mentioned thin spots, where "dirt" is visible between and around the rails, you may notice spots where there is simply not enough ballast. Below, you can see another type of thin spot. To my eyes, there should not be spots on a well - used mainline track where you can see the base of the ties. (Look near the center of the picture):





A pinch of two of ballast should take care of the problem. Don't forget to reshape the ballast after sprinkling. (Looks like I need to get some off the sides of the rails too eh?):











Alrighty then!!! We are pretty much done with the spreading phase. Whew! You made it! Actually, the above 6 inches total of ballasting took about 7 -10 minutes. REMEMBER, you can shape ballast in small steps. Take frequent breaks. Listen to music. "Let us meditate on this knowledge class..."

The third phase (next post) is decidedly easier...



Now class, lets review the enemies of "decent" ballasting - or "decent" ballast spreading. Keep these in mind as you attempt to shape that pesky scale - sized ballast:



Number one:

WINDROWS (or is it WIND ROWS?)













Number two:

STRAY BALLAST ON THE TOPS OF THE TIES










Number three:


(STRAY) BALLAST ON THE SIDES OF THE RAILS - includes windrows, but are usually individual pieces (or clumps thereof)

I thought my ideas might help. Nobody seems to talk about the problem areas that crop up during the spreading phase and what to look out for. "Carefully spread the ballast" never seems to cover it.

The other thing that struck me is that its really not very difficult to spread the ballast at all. Its really a matter of careful brush use and using your "scale eye". After all, we are N scalers. We develop our "scale eyes" to a finer degree than some. We perceive things to a finer degree because we "have" to. I urge others to use them to look at the ballast, as we do other items in our scale.

I should point out that you may want to take note of how wide, your ballasting job gets. I am using standard cork under my mainline track. I made no effort to try to trim back any of it. In trying to cover the cork in its "as cut from the factory" condition, the "footprint" of the ballast may exceed that of the prototype. This may not be acceptable to some.

In the middle of the picture below (on the raised mainline track), you can see my effort at ballasting both sides of the track.













Indeed, it is very easy to get the ballast too wide. I have learned to accept my ballast being too wide. But I thought I should mention it here for the benefit of others. Of course, I have the advantage of a shelf layout. What may look too wide in one view:











Seems to look just fine on a shelf layout.







I believe that trimming your cork's edge near even with the sides of the ties (before spreading you ballast) might help reduce this effect. I'll have to try it later...

Ok, so lets get on to gluing the stuff down. Again, I really have no new techniques or amazing insights here, just some things to look out for and keep in mind.

My wetting agent is good ole isopropyl or rubbing alcohol. I don't really worry about what percentage it is. It seems to matter not for ballasting.








I prefer to use a sprayer or mister that looks like this. You can find them at craft stores, etc.








After loading up the sprayer with the isopropyl, I get ready to wet the ballast by holding it in this kind of position towards the tracks:










As others have taught us, the idea is not to spray the tracks directly, but rather let a gentle "rain" of mist settle on our intended area. Spraying the tracks directly at the spot that you carefully shaped your ballast in often results in disaster. Often, large drops emerge from the sprayer that act as scale "artillery"; bashing and misshaping our ballast! Try instead, to let that gentle rain of isopropyl fall on your ballast. I often try to overshoot, or otherwise intentionally miss my target area. I added some lines to my picture to help give you the idea:





Oh, and you should probably find a way to protect your "sky" while spraying the isopropyl. I often use just a scrap piece of cardboard that I hold up against my "sky" while spraying.








After roughly eight or nine or twelve "pumps" of this isopropyl mist (ooh, good new - age band name), you may notice not only the pungent odor of isopropyl (rubbing alcohol), you may also notice that the surrounding terrain begins to look "wet" or glossy on each side of the ballast. These two clues let you know that the isopropyl has penetrated the ballast sufficiently. Also, this lets you know that you can get the sprayer closer to the ballast and change the angle of your sprayer. You may wish to do this for areas that you feel are not yet wet enough with the alcohol. HOWEVER, be careful to maintain a certain distance from the ballast. Too much direct spraying will scatter the stuff! Below, you can see the "dirt" near the track getting that "wet enough" look:










Although its harder to see the glossy look behind the mainline track, you can easily see it in front of the lower (siding track) below. Now its ready for glue!












Now, without a lot of delay, get ready to glue. I use the tried and true method of a 50/50 mix of white glue and water (bottle turned to hide the manufacturer  ;)). I add just a couple drops of dish washing liquid to the bottle to help break the surface tension of the water. I mix these items well. The nearly empty bottle makes a very good applicator for this mixture. Others have used pipettes and eye droppers with good effect also.








The thing that is handy for me about this dispenser is that gravity does the work for you. One just needs to adjust the nozzle to get the appropriate "drip rate". This rate will depend on you and your comfort level. I suggest starting at a slow drip rate. As you gain experience, you can adjust the nozzle to a faster drip rate. I like it to go at a medium speed. A complete drip about every second works for me, sometimes slower. I warn against letting your gluing mixture flow at an excessive rate. Just like the water of a river or lake, the faster the water hits the sand, or ballast in this case, the more distortion of your ballast you will get. I know the the temptation is to just let the stuff flow quickly and get it done faster. I find that our careful shaping of the ballast is often DESTROYED by this. Go slower, your reward will be less ballast distortion and a nicer looking end result, not to mention less repair later.











Ok, here we go. After getting my target area appropriately soaked with isopropyl - so it "stinks" and the surrounding ground looks wet, I like to shortly afterwards apply the glue mixture. I begin by letting it fall a short distance onto the area between the rails. Remember that these drops of glue are yet another source of ballast distortion/displacement. My theory is that starting this way, the drops have a "fence" that keeps them from traveling farther across the surface of the ballast. Therefore, the ballast will be distorted less. Also, this allows the glue to begin to flow into the cracks between the ballast and into the areas outside the rails. Distortion will still occur, this just helps reduce it.











I continue to apply the glue mixture slowly between the ties until all my targeted ties are covered. I take the time to let the drips cover this area completely. This is probably overkill I'm sure, but the glue will seep in the ballast to cover the spaces between each tie. It just gives me peace of mind to cover the whole area equally. (Actually, you can see a few ties at one end that need covering - whupps.)











Now, I let the glue mixture fall on the tie ends on the outside of the rails. Usually, it ends up flowing out onto/in the ballast on the "slopes" of the roadbed naturally. I let it fall onto the tie ends to minimize the distortion that each drop can have on the ballast. Try to avoid dropping the glue directly on the ballast if you can. Try to let the glue seep into the ballast naturally wherever you can.










I should note that you will repeat this procedure on the "opposite outside" of the track pictured above.







Now, same procedure, but different track. Here we apply glue starting between the rails. Note that there are some gaps where the glue drops did not fall. Despite the fact that glue will very likely flow into these gaps, I like to go back and "fill in" these gaps by dropping more glue on these dry spots. It lets me know that the glue mixture was evenly applied - I recommend it.









Here is a "different" situation. I am applying glue to the outside of the rail on the lower track, using the method mentioned above. Here, I want the glue to flow uphill towards the higher mainline track, which it does naturally. This helps to make sure the deeper ballast gets a good soaking of glue.












And to finish off, I give the "other outside" of the rail its soaking of the glue mixture. I would not worry about using too much glue here, per se. Sure, you do wind up with a lovely, soupy looking, mess of wet ballast. Fear not. This is the correct idea! You have done well.










You may begin to notice spots where the glue mixture is starting to build up or puddle along the edges of the ballast. This is a potential problem area. Look along the outside of the lower track. Note that the glue is starting to emerge or flow out of the lower edge of the ballast below:






Another clue is that you may notice excess glue flowing away from your ballast. Take notice. These are pointers to potential problem spots.








Note the puddle of the glue mixture in the ballast edge below. Careful observers may note that the glue is starting to form an "alluvial fan" along the edge of the ballast. Its hard to spot in my picture. Its almost something you have to watch for as the glue settles. (See I told you water can disrupt our ballast.) Anyway, do not panic. Just take note of these areas.










I realize that at this point its really tempting to just walk away and be done. I urge you to take a break and return in a few minutes. There is one more thing to do before the glue dries. We need to think about some repair from our glue application process. Take a look at our ballast after the glue has sat for a few minutes.






Its hard to tell in my picture above, but one may notice "craters" from places where our glue droplets fell. You may also notice spots where the ballast has settled into lumps or depressions that look unrealistic to you. It is important to fix these spots while the glue is still wet. The lumps are now wet with glue and are difficult to smooth out. I don't really condone attempting to reshape them. While there is not much we can do about the lumps, we can add ballast to "soften" them. We can also add ballast to fill in the depressions. Simply apply a small pinch of ballast to these spots. The magic thing is that the glue will naturally seep into these new additions and they will dry as if they were part of the original application. Its takes a little bit of practice, but soon you will get the hang of it.










You might be able to spot a problem area here too. Enough ballast got washed away here to expose the "dirt" underneath. Another place where a pinch of ballast can be applied.






You will notice that I not only applied ballast to the above turnout, I applied glue to it also. This terrifies some. I find that if I lightly ballast the points of my Atlas code 55 turnouts, and keep my glue mixture just a little bit on the "watery" side, I am able to free up my turnouts from the dried glue with only a little effort.


You may have noticed that the act of gluing disturbs the ballast. Some ballast ends up getting washed up onto the tops of the ties and the sides of the rails. Fear not. We have ways to help correct this. Stay tuned...
