PRR's Merchandise Service

After recently picking up the original set:



To go with the previously purchased expansion set:



I got to thinking.  Does anyone know much about the PRR Merchandise Service?  I know that it was name for the PRR's LCL service, but I don't know much about how the service operated.  Were there dedicated MS trains?  Were there dedicated trans-loading facilities?  Or did the MS cars simply run as part of general freight consists between freight houses?

It is a good start, but I already read through it. It doesn't really answer how the service was operated. Like most of the resources that I found, it centers on the paint schemes.

Hmm, i think there is a book out in the world that is on just the PRR's merchandise service. I caught a glimpse of it on a book dealer's stand at a train show so no other info, but hopefully its a starting point.

Did you try asking this on any of the PRR yahoo groups?  I'm interested in the same as I have both sets too.  Want to run my K4 kitbash at the head end...
