NSC Boxcar

Hi guys,

I've just heard from Jeff Briggs that  his new NSC boxcars are now ready, these are the type used by NAR, BC Rail and CN.

I just wanted to let you know that the NSC boxcar kit I was working on is finally ready. You can order from Central Hobbies, or direct, whichever you prefer. The cost will be $30 each, and it comes less trucks, couplers, and decals.

If it's the design used by NAR, it was also used by BC Rail (BCIT) but CN did not have any double door cars of this design.

And NAR also became CN. So technically all of those cars are CN, but none were ever renumbered into CN numbers. And I haven't seen examples repainted either, although CN has started repainting other BCOL cars.

Definately none of these ever wore CN reporting marks; and I haven't seen evidence yet of any in CN colours. Might be neat to see one with a CN noodle and NAR reporting marks.

I'm not sure. I haven't seen one in a while either, but there were only ever 100 NAR cars, so they'd be sporadic sightings at best, and I only get out railfanning every few weeks on average, for a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. It appears the most recent photo I have is from 2008, but that doesn't mean they're all gone yet.

Good luck with  that. Sorry to be negative but the price of N scale cars  is really getting out of hand.  Perhaps it's my advancing age and deteriorating eye sight, but I would rather see more reasonably priced cars on my rails than one or two "perfect" ones.

You've got to remember, these are essentially craftsman style "kits" of specific cars. We can't all be as lucky as us PRR/PC/CR/NH guys are to have Bryan's ESM making us our road specific stuff in RTR form (for about that price, actually).

I really don't want the Railwire to turn into "A forum for bitching about model railroad price inflation" again...

Things go up in price, especially as they go up in quality and specificity.

You might not've been around when he did it, but about a year ago (I think), during the last round of kvetching that "my chosen hobby is getting too expensive", John put together a study of prices of the same car over the years. What he found was that it's not that prices have gotten too hight, it's that over the past 12 years or so, they hadn't kept up with inflation, and are now getting back to where they would've otherwise been.

It's one thing to complain that Verizon is forcing us to pay twice as much for not nearly as good of service and are doing it only so that they're millions of owners stock can go up by a few cents.

In the case of model manufacturers, it's either folks who are doing it to be able to maintain a middle class living, or to make it worth their time to bring us cool stuff. There's no evil cabal of model railroad manufacturers trying to shake you down for your lunch money.

Craftsman kits have always been more expensive than mass-produced RTR stuff. It's one guy in a basement pouring the resin castings by hand.

Jeff Briggs get's it right - he's the force behind a dozen or so unique Canadian craftsman lits including the exceptional M630 and Dofasco truck project. He knows his target market is but a few hundred crazy Canuck modelers, knows the level of detail and proto correctness we expect and he delivers... and his service is excellent - I had a cracked shell last year; could have been in shipping or, for that matter I could have cracked it myself - Jeff simply sent a new one, no costs, period.

Hells Gate's PRR BM70K express kit - $ 33.00... Brass sides - @ 20.00 plus a Core Kit....equals about $ 30.00... so this isn't out of the ball park for a car that no RTR mfg is going to tool.....sure, it's a 50' boxcar but it's a unique model that many of us are eagerly awaiting.

Jeff's been at this a while so he knows what HIS market will accept, both in terms of quality and price.

I don't have any issue with this offering.
