Why can't I post to or see certain forums or threads here?

There are certain forums that as a new member you will not be able to see and/or post in. This is to keep people from posting junk items, trolling or not contributing in other areas. Once a member has reached 25 posts they will be able to post and or view these forums.

This thread/topic is not available to you
This means the topic or thread has been moved to a forum that has the post restrictions. This is due to topics/threads being moved because they were not posted in the proper forum to begin with and an administrator or moderator has moved the topic/thread. Topics/Threads are moved to keep the forum organized, and notification is not given of the move.

It seems to me that this policy is more likely to encourage people to post junk items, just to get to that 25 post target. I will comment if I think have something worthwhile to contribute, but every time I encounter this barrier I am tempted to just post junk comments simply to get my count up.

The policy certainly could have the effect you note, but it doesn't seem to in practice.

well .. we have had some people join just to sell crap .. that we discourage.

we also want to see if you are really a model railroader .. or a spammer with ill will .. so -- yea its a pain .. but nothing in life is easy ..

IIRC, there is a also a minimum number of posts required to post in Crew Lounge. Newbies end up posting OT things in the N/Z forum but the stuff can't be moved until they get enough posts to be allowed in the Crew Lounge.  There is currently such a thread in the N/Z forum. To me that makes no sense.  IMO, that restriction should be lifted - after all, this forum is so heavily moderated that if a newbie goes wild and raises stink in the Crew Lounge (which is already set up for off-topic and controversial stuff anyways), the moderators can easily deal with the situation.

It keeps it so it doesn't get out of hand before we get a chance to move or delete. We have real jobs other than watching a forum all day.


Main idea is to have people contribute in the modeling areas before being allowed to "hang out". For the sales forum the idea is that it allows the person to establish themselves as somewhat trustworthy member and not some fly by night spam seller.

Sure it can - I moved the IM cancellation thread to the Lounge yesterday.  Now the OP is out of luck through no fault of his own.  I try not to do that, but sometimes I get impatient.

It's a long standing Railwire policy that has served us well.  Everyone is being very generous with their ideas today on how we should do business, however our business model is not born of arbitrary dictatorship, but rather experience.  I would not be expecting the minimum post count rules to change.
