Finally put together some pictures form my project weekend.  Colored the faces of the rocks around my first tunnel and did some highlights and weathering.  I used E/L Gray for the base color and added some L&N Gray in random spots.  I used CSX Tan for highlights and earth colored powders for weathering.  Still haven't added alot of ground details or coloring /weathering of the tunnel face or bridge abutment.  Did have a question regarding ground color towards the top of the mountain.  Should I carry the gray all the way to the top or should there be some brown ground coloring around the rock and towards the top?  I realize that alot of this area is going to covered by various forms of ground cover, but wanted some input regarding this.  When observing pictures online you don't really see any of actual ground color except for the lower exposed areas.

Next you will be wanting me to put the placards on the tank cars!

To show you how observant I am, I have had that engine since 2004 and never even saw the hidden cutout in the box with the handrails in it. I may get the end handrails on but it is going to take younger eyes than mine to get the other 7 handrails attached.

Some superb work David. If you took a full photo of just a segment of the rock face, i probably couldn't tell you it wasn't real. Keep up with the good work! -Cody F.

Dave, fantastic job on those rocks!  The placement and coloring are perfect!

I have one minor critique, though, being somewhat engineer-minded...  The bridge abutment.  I see the piece behind the bridge shoes, but the shoes themselves rest upon bare rock.  I'm not saying that never happened, but I would be more used to seeing an abutment below the shoes.

Otherwise, looks extremely realistic!

EDIT:  Thought I had a better pic, but you can see a Chooch stone abutment protruding from hand-carved rocks below the Kato bridge on my former layout.  Something like this would be more in line, in my opinion, with railroad engineering standards.

In response to Dave Vollmer's post about the bridge shoes, what you are seeing in David Gray's pictures is Kato's piers, which includes bridge shoes.  The Kato piers are supposed to look like the bridge shoes on a concrete pedestal.  It's the concrete pedestal that is actually sitting on the rocks on David Gray's layout.  The bridge shoes are just a smaller portion of that pier.  It's difficult to see the actual shoes in those pictures, but you can make them out if you look close.

On my former layout, I cut those bridge shoes out of the Kato pier, glued them to the bridge, and set the bridge on Chooch abutments.  You can clearly see one shoe at the far end of the bridge supporting it where the bridge rests on the abutment.

That absolutely was not a Dave on Dave smack down.  There's no way I am worthy of smacking down Dr. Vollmer.  I was just trying to provide some clarity and information, since I have experience with that very same Kah-toe bridge.
