Need more pre-chessie schemes

Manufacturers seem to produce plenty of Chessie but what about the original B&O and C&O schemes! Western Maryland is decently represented, for instance the exactrail and blma covered hoppers address Chessie but have not done the original as delivered C&O and B&O schemes. Athearn and atlas plus mtl have to a degree but others have for the most part not done any of these schemes. Being a Chessie modeler it would be nice to see some more B&O and C&O schemes along with Western Maryland.

I agree we need more in the roads that made up the Chessie system since many locomotives and cars was not painted into Chessie. There seems to be more lettered for the B&O and WM then the C&O.

As "food for thought" a Chessie modeler should have the bulk of his engines lettered for the road he models along with the correct style of signal.

IMHO 40% of the engines should be lettered for the road he models. In other words If I model Chessie(C&O) then 40% of my engines  should be painted in C&O.

As a interesting fact

Many may not know this but the Chessie System was the parent company of the three Chessie roads and these roads was not merged under the Chessie..The mergers came under CSX..

Chessie started around '74 as I was breaking into the industrial traffic side of the desk. The firm I worked for shipped cars out of WVa to Saginaw via a route of B&O-Toledo-C&O. That route stayed in place until the Chessie-Family Lines mergers in the mid 80's when it would change to CSX.

Pricing negotiations were centralized to Baltimore. Never did I sent any requests to Cleveland.

You should be happy with our B&O releases over the next couple of months then.

As a interesting fact

Many may not know this but the Chessie System was the parent company of the three Chessie roads and these roads was not merged under the Chessie..The mergers came under CSX..

There are differing histories, but my understanding of the CSX merger goes as follows:

On November 1, 1980, CSX Corporation is formed.  This is not the merger of the railroads, but merely their parent companies.  That is, Chessie System, Inc. owned the C&O, B&O, and the WM, and SCL Industries owned the SCL, L&N, CRR, and Georgia Railroad).  This was the merger of Chessie System, Inc. and SCL Industries.  The railroads still remained separate entities.  Remember, the Chessie System and Family Lines paint schemes were, for the most part, a marketing ploy in an era of mergers.  So, at this time, Chessie System (sublettered for the C&O, B&O, and WM) and Family Lines (sublettered for the SCL, L&N, CRR, Georgia RR) paint schemes were still the current paint schemes on locomotives and rolling stock of the separate roads.

On January 1, 1983, SCL Industries' roads merge to form Seaboard System.  SBD paint schemes begin to appear.

On May 1, 1983, B&O took over WM.

On July 1, 1986, Seaboard System's name is changed to CSX Transportation, a subsidiary of CSX Corporation.  This is when the CSX paint scheme began to appear on locomotives and rolling stock.

On April 30, 1987, C&O took over B&O, such that the C&O was the last surviving Chessie road.

On August 31, 1987, C&O was merged into CSX Transportation.

Hope this helps,

A few corrections.

On May 1, 1983, B&O took over WM..
------------------------
Indeed the WM was fully merged into the B&O.The  B&O and C&O acquired full control of the WM in 1967.
-------------------------
July 1, 1986, Seaboard System's name is changed to CSX Transportation, a subsidiary of CSX Corporation.
---------------------------------

CSX Transportation absorbed Seaboard System Railroad on July 1, 1986..
---------------------------------

On April 30, 1987, C&O took over B&O.
-------------------------
The C&O controlled the B&O since May 1962.On April 30,1987 the B&O was merged into the C&O.The B&O was 160 years old.
------------------------
That might be splitting hairs but, that's the way it went down.

While those are nice cars the best they can be used for is in MOW service.

You see Chessie was formed after the formation of Amtrak in '71 and didn't operate passenger trains.

The Chessie Steam Special and the 614 doesn't count as scheduled passenger trains.

In the past couple of months, MTL has put out 4 B&O heavyweights, and I am waiting on a bunch of new wagontops from Fox Valley.  I passed on the last run of Bluford B&O hoppers because I have a whole lot already.  Now Joe is saying that MTL has more B&O in the pipeline.  I don't know about C&O, but there has been enough B&O coming out to keep Mr Wallet nervous.

There has been a ton of C&O decorated rolling stock over the years as well.  None of the three Chessie predecessors have ever been neglected in N.

That is true but, plain jane C&O locomotives are hard to find.

Also note even under the Chessie C&O had locomotives in every one of their previous paint schemes.

IF one desires to be a true C&O/Chessie(C&O) modeler he needs tons of GP7/9s since these was C&O's workhorses until their retirement..

Atlas has released C&O on all of their 2nd generation diesel power models over the years, including the GP7 and GP9.  Hunting them down may take some effort, but they have been done.

That is a excellent idea for the GP30s. :D

However for the other locomotives,if one doesn't want to hunt down the Atlas C&O releases he can start with the undecs and go from there remembering most Geep7/9s had the blue/yellow with C&O on the hood-thankfully some can be done in the plain blue scheme with Chesapeake & Ohio on the hood or use the plain C&O.

One should watch his numbering since some of C&O Geeps went to the B&O and retain their C&O numbers.

I suggest using this as a guide in numbering their locomotives in the correct paint schemes and numbers.

When I modeled the C&O/Chessie in HO I found that site to be a invaluable resource.

If you don't want to paint it yourself or have to cobble together the pieces to complete the shell on the GP30 from Atlas parts (it doesn't come with handrails or walkways!), try eBay or the N Scale Yard Sale in Yahoo!Groups.  In the last several years, if I recall correctly, Atlas has offered 2 GP38s, 3 SD35s, 3 U23Bs, 2 U25Bs, 2 GP30s, and 2 GP9s (with more announced recently).  Those are just the ones that come to mind, and they are all pre-Chessie schemes with most in the simplified "merger" scheme.  The GP9s are in the first-generation scheme, likely as their delivered appearance with the yellow stripes.

Additionally, you can find Life Like E8s in the C&O passenger scheme.  I'm not 100% certain, but Intermountain may have released (or announced) C&O FP7s in the freight scheme.  Since IM cancelled a bunch of schemes, I can't recall what happened to the C&O locos.  IM did make B&O FP7s, which, interestingly, were former C&O F units transferred to the B&O when the C&O took control over the B&O.  I believe that you can also find C&O passenger cars from Walthers and IM, as well as possibly Centralia and Rapido.

MTL, Atlas, and Athearn, among others, have all offered a number of C&O (pre-Chessie) freight cars.

Hope this helps,
DFF
