It was purchased by a WMRHS member in 1988.  The boiler shell and front end was stock Union Pacific, but it came with the tender you see here.
I modified the pilot and the cab to give it a little more of a WM appearance.

I guess you could check catalogs from that era for a part number.

Lee, like the shots you took. Looks like the challenger came together quite nicely. It's a shame that there"s no room to be had for DCC. A couple wires could probably be snuck up along the frame to the motors but i don't know if wiring them in parallel rather than in series would effect the decoder output.

There's plenty of room in there, and it would actually be a good candidate for sound and everything.  But the Society layout doesn't run DCC, so there's no point in putting it in.

I expect one day they'll make the leap, and when they do, I'll have about 20 engines to do!

The First Quarter 2011 issue of The Warbonnet (The official magazine of the SF Railway Historical & Modeling Society) it pretty much totally devoted to SF Marine Operations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Total goldmine for models who love waterfront / railbarge ops, who love San Francisco, or both.
The magazine takes a little while to get to you after you order it, but very very worth it.

Thanks! I ordered it, and did receive an advisory that it would be some time until it arrived. I have a feeling the barges will be much easier than the tug. The tug hull mold alone took more than a liter of RTV, and I think each pour is well over 300 ml--I'll have to look at my notes next time I'm pouring. And the molds for the front and rear houses were in the 600 ml area. I went through two gallons of RTV really quickly--that's more than $150.

I want to thank everyone here for their suggestions and guidance. It's been invaluable to me.

No.  I'm old fashioned.  I like the whir of the electric motors and the clickety clack of plastic wheels! (and some metal ones, too!)

I'm sure a nice MRC Tech 6 could be a nice bridging point before that leap and it would allow for some sound to be snuck in, but then again you could always just lean on the horn for DCC....  :D

I designed and built the original N layout at Union Bridge in the late 80's, which is when we acquired the engine.  In 1995, I moved to the Eastern Shore, so the museum is a good 2.5 hours away... I can lean on the horn all I want, but no one will hear it...

Lee, shouldn't you be modeling the Eastern Maryland?

Seriously the WM only had around 800 miles of track and was
classified as a class 1 railroad. What are the classifications and
their cutoff points?

Classification has to do with revenue more than length.  Norfolk Southern torwards the end was only around 600 miles and was a class 1.
