52' 10 over the running boards and 55'2 over the strikers (coupler omitted as they aren't scale), gives you 2' 4" each end (nominally) and figure almost another foot of running board gives you about 3'4" or 40". At 1:160 scale, that's .25 or 1/4 inch.

OK, dimensions.  The ESM cars while stretched measure around 8'-7" from the end of one car to the next.  This dimension may vary based on what part of the car end you measure from.  Down here in East Dover Yard there were some cushioned underframed cars which I measured.  The cars looked to be stretched or at least close to it.  The number I came up with between the prototype cars is in the ballpark of 8'-6".  This may vary based on whether the slack is stretched or compressed.  I figured I would go one step further.  I could not get the measurement of a truck width but my 72 Mustang is about 6'-6" wide.  So you could definitely drive my mustang between the cars.  Maybe not the truck though.  So I have found that the ESM cars are about 1" too generous in the coupling distance between cars.  I will be canceling my order! 

Coupling distance can be one of those tricky things with the cushioned underframed cars.  They almost look cartoonlike but that is the way the cars were designed.  From the perspective of someone who works for the railroad, the more distance between cars, the better.

But regardless, I think our new member may just not be familiar with cushioned draft gear. There's no need to call him an ******** about it (unless, of course, he really is the real Mr. Trollface, in which case, he should prepared to watch for the boot).

Looks great Bryan!  I suspect that the spacing would have to be slightly wider than the prototype due to the lack of a scale coupler. Glad to see that ESM didn't compromise on the issues that it could control. The cushioned draft gear looks great and I have already ordered three of these cars.

The draft gear box itself actually is shorter than it should be to compensate for the MTL coupler heads.  I think I reached a good compromise with keeping the coupler face distance correct and providing a good simulated extended cushioned underframe draft gear box.  And if we are counting rivets - we know the dimensions of the coupler box are enlarged to compensate for the coupler mechanism.  Originally I had designed it extended to the full prototypical distance and it looked horrible, even though the coupler box dimensions are the smallest in N scale presently.  But compensating for the MTL coupler length was a blessing in disguise, as it made the draft gear box more acceptable.
