I can't believe there's a need for Bath & Hammondsport cars.

Pretty sure B&H was one of the IPD players in the late 1970s, when a lot of obscure little shortline roads were leasing up colourful new boxcars by the bucketload simply to free-run on other railroads and collect per diem charges. These cars may not have spent much if even any time on the home rails of their owners.

The last few years of the '70s and first couple of the '80s, until the IPD bubble burst were certainly pretty colourful for new boxcars. After the crash and recession of the early 1980s these started going to all sorts of second-hand owners.

Used to see the B&H cars (possibly restencilled) quite frequently in the 1990's on Conrail routes in NJ...

I think they had been restencilled to HS (Hartford & Slocum, which I believe was an Itel road) - Didn't Itel go to GE, because EEC is a GE owned road.

Bath & Hammondsport are two towns in the NY wine making areas about 30 miles south of Rochester on I-390.

They may have been served by CR back in the day, but the tracks in that area are pretty much grown over. Norfolk Southern has the Southern Tier, which isn't too far, but if there's any local service, it would be done by B&P.  They store a couple of switchers near a salt works at "shakers Crossing?".  The interstate almost follows the tracks.
  I didn't think the tracks south of there were used til I saw a (had to be) ex P&W loco pulling 5 or 6 cars. 

This was all prior to 2006 when I stopped making weekly trips to Buffalo.

The B&H lives as part of the Livonia, Avon & Lakeville Railroad (LA&L) system.  B&H Rail Corp.

Regular service is run from Painted Post, NY to Wayland, NY on former Conrail ROW. The headquarters is in Cohocton with a small engine house.  It's the location that the former Cartier MLW's were stored before being put to work on the other railroad in the LA&L roster, the WNY&P.  Two ALco demo C-636's remain stored there.  LA&L has an  ALco C-424 BH 422 in service and 2 original B&H ALco S-1's stored serviceable.
