Some traveling for me.  Got to take a bunch more pictures of Waterloo IA, and on the way back snapped a couple shots.

And went to UP's Golden Spike Tower at Bailey Yard in North Platte.

Boy this was a b!tch and took longer than I thought.  But bus #2 is done for later this fall.

Back hopefully to some passenger cars if some parts arrive within the next few days.

Not too much this weekend. took some butcher paper and made mock ups of my new modular layout sections, Cruised the neibourhood collecting scrap wood, it is amasing what the german throw out, I got probally 100 feet of 1x4 that are arrow strait, and some decent 1/4" homisote (spelling?) board, Mabey enough to actually build the base for the modules. I also rebuilt the pickups on my daughter's thomas the tank engine, and moved the decoder back inside the loco, elimnating the need for a boxcar for pickup. Of course as soon as I did that, she whined that "Charlie" (she named the boxcar) was gone. So now I gotta rebuild a frame for "Charlie." Also got a decoder back into my Atlas Shay, and have one on deck for the heisler.

EDIT: Just got done "Decoderizing" the Heisler, now gotta get back to the craft store to get some brass tube so I can finish the mo-fo. Oh and I need some Tiny surfaced mounted LEDs also.

After a long hiatus from modeling fraught with all manner of problems from health to legal, I'm finally back to work on the G&D. With the wooden trestle finished and installed, I'm starting on the surrounding scenery.

David, what will you be using in terms of power on the Z scale G&D? Will any of the locomotives be modeled after those on the G&D or are you utilizing your modelers license in this case?

After a big box arrived from Klein's, I was able to get track laid, trains running, and some terraforming completed. It only took a solid 10 hours of work yesterday, but no one's complaining. My apologies for the high ISO in the pictures. This will not be the final location of the layout so lighting is minimal at the moment.

I had an opportunity to blitz some scenery this week so I took it.  The trade off is I won't get to spend time on the layout now until late August so this is the last update in a while.

This week I painted backdrop details, and flocked and planted many hundred trees (500 or so?).  Here are some shots of the final area on the second deck to get scenery.

This shot shows Coryell at far left and Lafferty at far right.  The length is about 12-13' I think.  That's 500 trees...scenery certainly gobbles them up.

Coryell tank will be hidden behind the trees in the middle of this scene below.  You may just be able to make out the mock up.  This area is a transition to the snow scenes and the scenery to the far left is not finished nor snowed trees added yet.

And a detailed view of a pusher set heading across Slide Bridge

I had hoped to post a Youtube video of the pusher set making its way through the scene but I am having problems with MovieMaker so no can do

Modeler's licence all the way. Power will be Märklin's Bumble Bee. You can see it in the maiden run vid:

SNFF 2011 07 23

Hi, all,

For my Foto Fun this week, I'm contributing some of the more
remarkable things that I saw at X2011 West and National Train
Show 2011.

Even though it's not N, I hope it's OK, as I think the ideas here
would be great for any scale :-).

This is Bill Iwan's beautiful HOn3 Rio Grande Southern display layout, that
Carstens Publications (the Railroad Model Craftsmen publishers) hosted
in their booth at the 2011 National Train Show.

What I love about this from an idea standpoint - let's see how Bill Iwan
angled two buildings to force perspective.  This is a great idea.

The house in the center background looks normal:

From above, look at the angle built into the building!:

The coal tipple looks normal:

I hope this idea from X2011 West and 2011 National
Train Show are worthwhile for us model railroaders.
I may have more to come in future weeks.  :-)

I believe that's the Ophir Tram House and that angle is actually how it was built.

Jason,
I think you are correct. They may have skewed it a bit for effect, but the front wall is supposed to be at an angle.

That's great to know, I've no idea of what the prototype was like.  I just Googled 'Ophir Tram House' and
can see there's a bunch of information on this prototype:

Maybe this angled front on Ophir Tram House is where Bill Iwan got the idea to enhance the angle to create more forced perspective?

I assume the other photo of the house with the angled wall, that this is a modeled effect,
it wasn't this way in real life?   Sorry, don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but probably good to know.  :-)

Thx for the good info.

The craftsmanship of Bill Iwan's modeling is absolutely superb; the structures are top-notch, and the scenery is breathtaking. But... I do have to wonder at the arrangement of things. A station immediately adjacent to (indeed, nearly under) a coal tipple? A house with skewed walls that don't need to be skewed? Am I the only one who finds this a bit odd?
