This week was an insperation week for me, I had one of those flash of genius moments.......Well no, not really, more like I was shuffling though David K Smith's blogs and came acrost his method of making a driveshaft for the Shay, and though, "Hell I could do that in N scale for the Heisler!" Well a weeks worth of evenings, burned fingers, and cussing later, I got it. their is actually connecting rods and cross heads in there, just hard to see. Then I went totally nuts and decided that it needed the universal joint behind the front truck. so I built one. Yes, it does flex like it should. I think I have totally lost my mind!

anyways, Pictures!

Video!
Sorry about the quality, my iPhone was the only video device I have that will focus that close with video!

Lee,

I like the flowing lines through the turnouts in the yard. You have done a nice job avoiding that angular geometry that can come when using commericial turnouts.

Best wishes, Dave

This constitutes the first N scale modeling (if you call it "modeling") I've done in over a decade.

Fair enough, I kind of forgot about them, since they were just restoration jobs.

Thanks Dave.  The main goal was to use turnouts I have in stock...  The nice flow was just a happy accident!

Just a few interior touches to add and this car can join the Kato COLA set. American Model Builders "Ocean" series sleeper.

The nose and sill were from NKP 709. Everything else was from some patched-out SCL unit that got 408 as a number. I have 2 other NKP GP18s that will become BN units soon. I do have an NKP 408 that I have no use for lol

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.

Worked on scratchbuilding a truss bridge which I started several weeks ago I found a technique that works pretty well I draw the bridge up in ACAD then I print out scale drawings and tape them to a flat surface such as a piece of wood I then tape clear .005 or .01 styrene sheet over the drawing after that I glue all the web members and gussets in place carefully aligning them with the scale drawing after that I trim away the clear styrene and insert spacer strips then lay the other side of the truss over the spacers carefully aligning those with the previous ones. It works great and the truss is perfectly aligned as in the drawing I got pictures I'll post of some of it. I'm also using Gold Metal models lacing bars for the web members and Archer rivets.

I took delivery on a bit of custom trackwork from John Wickham (who sells turnouts on eBay) for a scale track for the Beer Line. I made a styrene base for the scale mechanism and foundation for my scale house. I still have some more work to do on it, but I like the looks of it. It should add some additional fun to operations, whenever that happens.

An overhead view.

A view from what will be the typical viewing height with some of the other structure mock-ups.

Took my kids to the $3 movies this afternoon, and I am about to have a Bombay Safire martini before a meal of king crab. I love Father's Day.

Best wishes, Dave

Finally got my kitbashed M&STL 40' ex-auto AAR 1937 boxcar with Creco double doors painted and started the decal application, hopefully to be completed in time for the convention.  Should have pics next week.

Also worked this week on designing a GM TDM4507, which I need for NETCo mid 1950s representation.

I have just a handful of details to add, and then I'll see if it can be rendered through Shapeways.  I envision the windows being formed with Micro Kristal Klear.  Wheels will have to be salvaged from an Athearn, Atlas, or CMW vehicle, but the Flxible wheel faces are the closest in accuracy to the prototype.

More caboose work....

First, a little farther along on the N&W CF...

Also a customer paint job. Stand in for a Monon wood side caboose. The Athearn would have been better but this is what he handed me to work with. Simply painted red, drew up and printed decals, then a little bit of hand rail detailing (not shown).
